If You Were A Teacher...

If you were a teacher, what are some of the things that you would do?

Today, I was thinking that if I were a teacher, on the first or second day of school I would tell the kids that the next day they will have to present in front of the class. The assignment would be to talk about any subject that they are knowledgeable about for three minutes or so without any notes.

The students would be graded solely on participation, but I would not tell them until after they all presented. My reasoning behind this: Public speaking is a big fear, and I think that it is important to become comfortable while standing in front of a group of people, but you can't get comfortable without practice.

Yes I had a presentation today... It was a good one, but I definitely need to enhance my public speaking skills. I can talk all I want from my seat, answer questions, crack jokes, etc. but I think that I, like many others, could use some more practice.

If I was a teacher, I’d definitely quit my job. The disrespect shown, especially by regular classes is absurd and the kids would hate me as well.

I would go out of my way to fully surpass the government-mandated curriculum.

I’d like to think that I could make 3rd/4th graders learn intermediate algebra and geometry within a year.

I would definitely do everything I could to make sure my students succeed and help them through personal issues, but at the same time I’d challenge them and make them reach their full potential. As someone who had (still do) two anxiety disorders before high school, I’ve met some incredible teachers who have helped me and have really impacted me. I’d like to be that kind of teacher :D

I’d make sure that my students knew that I was not basing my respect for them off of their test scores - or that if they performed poorly one one (or multiple) assignments, I don’t think any less of them.

If I were a boy…
I mean, if I were a teacher, then I would be nice. Any disrespect… Detention for days and days… Of course that comes with homework everyday too. I’m so nice :)

I’d teach math. A lot of the grade would be based on tests, like in a college class.
But every week I would give out a problem set, and a couple of problems would be assigned for homework every day. They would all be word problems of some kind (not necessarily “story” problems, though), and they’d be more interesting/challenging than what I would expect on a test, so you’d get full credit for making an honest attempt even if you were wrong. The next day I would have different students go up to the board and write their solutions/attempts, and then I would spend the class discussing the homework problems and the “theory” behind them.
What I mean is, I’d assign homework on a topic before I taught about that topic in class. I think I have an honors class in mind here…I really don’t know what I’d do with a kid who wasn’t motivated. Sometimes that happens because of issues at home and I feel like there wouldn’t be much I could do.

I’d never make fun of my students, and I’d make a decent effort to appear invested in and excited about my job.

i’d teach…history, probably

i would treat all my students the same, ask them when things should be due (within reason), announce tests/projects in advance, i would not be nitpicky about presentations, i would accept late work within two days, and give out candy because everyone loves the teacher who gives out candy

I would not make attendance mandatory, nor would I care if students were late to class or anything. If they choose to show up they would have to be respectful, however, and in class I would go over the tests and stuff to reward those who choose to show up (I still wouldn’t show up if I had myself as a teacher).

I’m in a teacher training program, so I already have to teach in front of kids. So if I was a certified teacher, I would just do what I am doing now.

Realize I’m wasting time and resign

We have trimesters, so this is how my syllabus would look like as a math teacher.

15% Test 1
30% Midterm
15% Test 3
40% Final

No extra credit, no homework. No curves either. It would be a constant lecture, and if you don’t understand, you would need to come in during office hours.

I’d be a terrible teacher. I don’t think anything I explain makes sense. I think if I was a teacher, I’d teach chemistry or math though. But high school, not college. I would try to use relatable examples.

I wish I had a teacher that would allow me to present for 3 minutes on any topic. I have so much things I can talk about :)

If I were a teacher, I would actually teach. Seriously it annoys me so much in high school how I had a lot of teachers who would teach for like 5 minutes every week and the rest of the time they would just make us do worksheets or labs.

pfft. I’d never be a teacher silly.

i would have to teach elementary school, while the kids are still cute
in my school district, the elementary-high school teachers all have the same starting salaries.

Overbyen: I agree with u on how some teachers don’t teach. My English teacher for example, gets distracted and only gives us vocab to do. I have had her for two years now, and all I have learned is their, there, and they’re. (I’m a senior.) Also, she is absent A LOT, so I have subs for most of the year (like this week.)
Also teachers at my school get SO distracted, and go off topic.
No wonder why my school’s test scores suck. We don’t learn anything!
