If you were me, which teacher would you ask for a rec?

I need a humanities rec for MIT/CalTech... and idk what to do.

Teacher 1: Freshman English teacher, got B's in her class, went to class every day, wasn't too good at writing at the time, didn't participate in class. She probably doesn't remember who I am.

Teacher 2: Freshman AP Human Geo teacher, got A's, late to class every day, slept in class every day, set the curve on every test. Got a 5 on the AP test. He probably doesn't remember who I am.

Teacher 3: Sophomore AP Comp teacher, got B's, didn't participate in class, sucked at writing at the time. Got a 3 on the exam. She probably doesn't remember who I am.

Teacher 4: Junior APUSH teacher, dropped out of her class second trimester, missed a lot of class. Got a 5 on the exam. She knows who I am, but avoided me when she saw me at work.

Teacher 5: Junior US Humanities teacher, got C's and D's, missed over 100 days of class, he thinks I'm a genius.

Teacher 6: Senior AP Lit teacher, getting C/D's, missed lots of class, she thinks I'm a genius, and wants me to get into MIT. She called me "president of the lazy place" and caught me skipping school.

Teacher 7: Senior AP Econ teacher, getting a B, do the best on all the tests, missed lots of class, but he doesn't care, don't know him too well, had him soph year for philosophy and got a B in that, too.

So which teacher should I choose for my humanities rec?

lol. Well…you can eliminate quite a few knowing
“they probably don’t remember who I am.”

It’d be a huge mistake if the teacher you chose wrote about your bad qualities.

How can you expect to get into MIT with what seems like so many C’s and D’s?

^^ That’s what I was wondering.

Teacher 6, I guess?

To be honest, none of them pop out as really good rec writers for you. I agree, if you have any doubt that they remember who you are you should take them off the list immediately.

That leaves 4, 5, 6, and 7. I’d go with 5 or 6, but even those don’t seem fantastic.

Yeah, for MIT and CalTech, none of those teachers is going to work. It won’t matter how great your rec is if you get Cs and Ds and miss a hundred days of class. I guess I’d go with the teaches who think you’re a genius, but that won’t get you into MIT. They have plenty of geniuses who get good grades and don’t skip/sleep in class.

I would go with # 6. I agree with the above post.

Save your application money and go get a pizza with your friends. I wouldn’t expect to get into the state school after missing about a hundred days of class.

You all misread…

“Teacher 6: Senior AP Lit teacher, getting C/D’s, missed lots of class, she thinks I’m a genius, and wants me to get into MIT. She called me “president of the lazy place” and caught me skipping school.”

He isn’t applying to MIT or any type of school of that nature. Its called… a joke.

^

Read the first sentence.

Pfft, these are humanities classes… I get all A’s in the real classes–my science rec will be amazing ;-P.

@ Gryffon: I already got into a state school, and my SAT’s good enough that MIT/CalTech seem like matches.

Suppose I’ll go with teacher 6… maybe I’ll go to class for the entire month of December or something crazy like that so she’ll write a good one.

But your rank is definitely sub-25%. I don’t think you realize that last year MIT accepted VERY few people who were in this position. They were probably hooked admits, like children of famous people or donors. You really have absolutely no chance if you’ve been receiving as many B’s, C’s and D’s as you’ve projected.

I’m in the top 5%. Don’t make assumptions. I take enough AP’s that it makes up for it. Geez.

I don’t believe you.

Perhaps this is a ■■■■■?

Nope, not a ■■■■■.

But sadly deluded and overconfident if he believes that C’s and D’s could be made up by an SAT score, humanities classes or not. Not to mention the fact that he thinks MIT and Caltech are matches. MIT and Caltech are not matches for anyone whether you got a perfect score or won the International Olympiads .

=-0. How insulting. I got a 4.6 GPA first trimester junior year. That makes up for the 3.6 third trimester. Evens out to 4.1, which barely lowers the 4.2 I had since freshman year.

The schools you apply to will be recalculating your GPA, and won’t be seeing it through the illusion of hyper-weighted GPA.

Realistically dude, you dropped out an APUS class, were absent(skipping) half of the school year, and achieved a whole collection of B’s, C’s, and D’s throughout your entire high school career. You’re only a good test taker and that may get you into a state school but not MIT or Caltech. If this was a chances thread, I’d rate your stats whatever is below ‘reach’.

sorry kid, but most schools look at unweighted GPA…and yours is closer to 3 than i would think suitable.

I have a 3.7 UW.
