If You Were Stranded On An Island . . .

Ok, let's all take a break from college for a minute. Suppose that you were stranded alone on a remote island in the Pacific . . . no chance of being rescued. There are no other inhabitants on the island. There is sufficient fresh water (from frequent rainfall) and food (indigenous plants, fruits, life in the water surrounding the island, etc.) for your needs, provided that you have the ingenuity to catch it. Assume further that you are healthy and will stay that way for the foreseeable future. Other than your clothing, you can have five -- and only five -- material possessions on the island. Those possessions cannot include any mode of transportation off the island or anything that enables you to communicate with the outside world. What items would you choose? Remember, the goal is NOT to get off the island, but to make due and be happy with very little.

Four hot girls and a self-replenishing supply of plan-B (still working on the technology to accomplish that).

Ah, cheating already, I see. There are NO other inhabitants on the island. Material possessions don't include girls (or guys -- sorry ladies), although I guess the Plan B would be ok.

Who said they were still alive? (Kidding, kidding...)

A house that comes with everything(theater, pool, gym). House counts as one item, I can put anything in that one item!

A supercomputer(monitor will be a theater screen) that can download new upcoming games. Also capability for online play(you won't communicate, just play with other people).

I can't think of anything else, you sort of always have to constantly be updated with the world, if that counts as communication? As long as you have internet, you really won't need anything else because the internet will always be updated and your life on the island won't.

^That stuff isn't going to be of much help without electricity. :-(

Ok, my five:

Knife.

Axe.

An ample supply of nylon cord.

Fishing hooks.

Flint (maybe something else instead of this, I think I could learn to make a fire without it).

Wow, I thought that the future engineers among you would be all over this problem . . .

It's like the SAT, you can get the hard questions easily sometimes but you only mess up on the easy-medium ones. I might get solar power along with wind turbines if the sun goes out, that could be my 3rd thing. Still, a supercomputer with internet is essential if you don't want to go insane.

You're technically violating the rule with that knife, ax, and flint because you can use the former 2 for signaling (depending on the polish level), and the latter for starting fires, which you can also signal with. So the entire premise of the thread screws you.

^Don't think so. The rules state that there is no hope of rescue, and that the intention is to remain on the island, so why would I bother trying to contact anyone? If you wish, however, we can amend the rules to state that the possessions cannot be used to attempt to contact the outside world.

Contact means talking to people or anything to do with getting updated? I don't know how you would find happiness knowing you would never get off and not being able to talk with anyone or do anything new with the world, especially if you knew you wouldn't be getting off of the island.

^The challenge is to figure out how to survive, and thrive, with an absolute minimum of stuff. For example, do I really need the flint that's on my list? Or could I figure out how to make a fire without it? The question is not what you want under these circumstances, but what you need. I think that a creative person could actually figure out how to do a lot under these circumstances with very little. As for being happy alone, I'm not sure that's an impossibility -- depends upon your emotional makeup and how resourceful you are. Although I have to admit that I did get a laugh out of Easy's "four hot girls" answer,

Why would you need a gun? There's no one (no inhabitants) on the island to shoot.

...and Pokemon? Do you mean Pikachu and the like??

TV set with unlimited channels

Computer w/internet

Hunting, obviously.

Somebody's been playing a little too much GTA! Guns are used for things other than shooting people.

drugs etc.

1) A noose
2) A place to tie it

Maybe he wanted to shoot his Pokemon...

I second the four dead girls
