IFS Class for Honors Credit

DD is registered for the Intensive Freshman Seminar in August and received an email saying that for the first time, honors credit will be offered for some of the IFS courses for students in the Hutton Honors College. She needs to decide by May 15 if she wants to take the course for honors credit, where “participants will be required to meet an additional appropriately challenging and course-specific component”. I realize that nobody has first-hand experience with this, since this is the first time honors credit is being offered for IFS. She is not sure what to do. On one hand, it would be great to already have an honors class under her belt before school even starts, and it would be nice to work with other honors students on the “additional coursework”. On the other hand, completing a 3-credit class in 2 weeks already seems challenging, and we’re not sure what other issues she will be dealing with during those weeks – homesickness, making friends, learning about campus resources, dealing with a new sleep schedule?? Will taking this class for honors credit be too much? I know she’s the only one who can really answer that, but looking for general feedback.

By the way, her first choice IFS class is “Leaving Teenage Wasteland: Expectations of Adulthood in Literature and Culture” and Dana Anderson is the instructor. Does anyone have feedback on this class or instructor?

Thanks!

I know nothing about that particular professor or class but my D3 took an IFS class several years ago when the classes were 3 weeks long. The students were very busy with class, assignments, excursions associated with the class, getting to know new friends, becoming familiar with the campus, participating in the social activities structured into the IFS experience. From my perspective, she would not have had time to be responsible for more class-related content. And she would not have wanted more and she was in the longer IFS session. She loved her IFS experience and received her first college “A”. Honors classes she chose to take in her remaining years at IU were always in her major.

Just an opinion from the parent of a soon to be graduated Hoosier!

Just in case anyone stumbles upon this year-old post, I thought I’d give an update. DD did take her IFS class for honors credit. For this particular class, the only difference was that the final essay length requirement was twice as long for students taking the class for honors credit. She said it was no big deal. I don’t know if the extra honors work for other IFS classes was more challenging, or if this will change in 2014, but she felt she definitely made the right choice by taking the class for honors credit.

I took mine last year for Honors credit as well. The only difference for my class was that we had to write a roughly ten page paper that the other students didn’t have to do. It wasn’t due until the end of September and it didn’t factor into our grade, however. I definitely recommend the honors credit assuming things remain the same. You won’t find much easier of an honors course on campus.
