Ilr 09 frosh hopefuls

Oh my god, your guys tests scores are stressing me out. I have a 29 ACT, and am waiting on my SAT scores to come in from Nov.1 which should be really good. I'm from the state of Washington though and have a 3.89 GPA with 8 Honors/AP's and am student body president as well as varsity athlete. But gosh, my ACT isn't in the 30's like your guys. Wow, do I have a chance?

Wow im very surpised by the amount of oos's here. Statistics are gonna be intresting. BJ you defintaley have a shot as long as you have an excellent gpa, class rank, and ILR like credentials to back it up.

Do we have any internationals applying here?
I'm applying from Canada!

Good luck guys. Most of you have much better high school resumes than I did when I applied 3 years ago.

I visited Cornell in September. I toured the school on the official tour, and then attended three info sessions, about:
1) the university in general
2) Arts & Sciences
3) ILR

I decided to apply Early Decision to Columbia. However, in the case that I am rejected, an application to ILR will be submitted pretty darn quickly. While Columbia is definitely my first choice, I would be overjoyed to attend either school. Gosh, Cornell is so beautiful...

ahh every one of you has either crazy academics or crazy extracurriculars.. i have neither.. wish i had done more with my life.. >_<

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how do you think the HumEc statistics are going to look like for ED this year? Like, how many spots do they have for ED'ers and will being an instater be an advantage/disadvantage this year since it's so competitive?

I'm worried about the same thing, Chandler. Cornell seems to be stretching itself thin, they recently made that announcement about their new financial aid policy, and the economy is sucky. I'm guessing that because of the economic state, more people are looking to public colleges, and the idea of reduced tuition at an Ivy is appealing, so maybe more applicants.
I wonder how all of this is going to impact In-state admissions to the contract colleges - I hear the Deans like to keep a 60/40 ratio, but there's no required # of instaters as far as I know.

I'm applying to HumEc PAM as a transfer btw, instater.

College------# of Frosh--------# of NY Frosh-------% from NY

Cals------------633----------------346----------------55%

HumEC --------275-----------------132----------------48%

ILR ------------152-----------------71-----------------47%

total-----------1060----------------549----------------52%

Thanks for the stats gumbi, but I was wondering about ED spots specifically? I can't seem to find it online.

Yeah, stargazer, the reason I STARTED looking at Cornell seriously was because of the Ivy-reduced tuition thing, but I really fell in love with HumEc when I visited it. However, the reason I decided to apply early decision (which is binding) was not only because I felt Cornell was the perfect fit but also because I knew that, if I got accepted, it would be somewhat feasible for me to pay for my education. It's still really expensive for my family, but at least it's a much better price.

However, I can see a LOT of NY-staters feeling the same way, and I'm really worried about HumEc's acceptance rates for in-staters this year.

I'm applying to HumEc HBHS as a freshman.

Yeah I literally just got back from my interview. The interview went really well and she said my stats and ec's were excellent but because im not a minority and im an instate student its going to be incredibly diffucult this year and I should prepare a very good bakup plan ughh. She explained that because of the NYS budget cuts all the contract schools are getting signifigantly less amounts of money next year and the admissions office is going to be admitting a lot more oos's just for the extra cash. Also she said ILR is trying to get more minorities this year than last. This all comes from tha alumni head of westchester.

cheers,
Mike

Wow that's really not good news at all, I applied ED to HumEc which has the same budget cuts I assume since it's a contract college, and I'm an in-stater and not a minority. My stats are maybe above average for Cornell, but then again so are a lot of other in-staters.

Ohhhh no....:(
I'm an instate minority, but I'm South Asian and even though we're smaller minorities than blacks/hispanics, we count as white...darn. I'm thinking of applying for Spring '10 or Fall '10 instead, but then I would transfer in as a junior, not a soph, and I REALLY don't want that.

Well I guess I am sort of a minority? (Russian-speaking Jewish) but that still counts as white at Cornell, since there are so many.

Well, Jews are still "white"...but Middle Eastern/South Asian people are "brown". We get to deal with racist comments from people who are convinced we're evil islamo-facists from India, or one of 'em evil Moslem places, but no AA because we're not Under-represented minorities.

....I am so tempted to put I'm half-Iriquois...:)

Yeah... at least I'm a Russian-speaking Jew so that's slightly less common than a non-immigrant family Jew? Maybe? Maybe not. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now haha.

hahaha... fo shizzle

who exactly count as a 'minority'?
and also, does it make sense for cornell to just accept more oos students?
What of alot of them are applying for financial aid, which means they may not be paying all that much tuition anyways?

I also have one question regarding the financial aid system though,
does the admissions commitee for ILR find out whether you are applying for aid or not? Because I remember I sent the finaid materials went to another address.

and btw, miktau, thanks for posting the helpful insight

accept100:

minorities - UNDER REPRESENTED only....Asians/South Asians/Mideastern = No AA. Native American, Hispanic, Black, are counted as minorities.

Also, Cornell is need-blind, so the ILR committee won't see if you applied for fin aid or not. But they will see if you're in-state, which worries me...:(

^^^ Yep star basically nailed it down. Ughh.
