Hardships:
father immigrated from Africa, lived in poor community, applying as Afican American, (and yes I know AA does not apply anymore)

it depends on your last name and your parent's last name too

For instance.... I am Egyptian which to some people makes it ok to check off black. However, Adcoms are not fools and by looking at my last name, and my parents last name, it'll be obvious that we aren't as such.

Now, if you have an italian last name or something I doubt it will help.

1/128th native indian blood would have worked to qualify for membership in the Pequot "tribe" - FOXWOODS founders and majority owners of the richest casino in the world

Probably won't workas well for normal college AA

The pequots also have a very interesting history. They were a tribe with only one person living on their reservation in the '70's. You can not blame them... they were one of the first to have contact with europeans. I suggest you read up on their history if you want to bash them

well, it is in fact true that AA helps minority (esp african-americans and hispanics) kids dramatically. research conducted by Princeton University estimate that if AA (and all racial consideration) wasn't a factor, Asians would fill 4 out of every 5 seats currently taken by African Americans and Hispanics

Article- Ending affirmative action would devastate most minority college enrollment
"Princeton University researchers have found that ignoring race in elite college admissions would result in sharp declines in the numbers of African Americans and Hispanics accepted with little gain for white students."

"Asian students would fill nearly four out of every five places in the admitted class not taken by African-American and Hispanic students, with an acceptance rate rising from nearly 18 percent to more than 23 percent."

scansmom, "that type of stereotyping" has merit and is not unjustified

"Dude, he's not a reach at Cornell. Poor URM status makes him a definite match."

-I dont know about that. I dont think he is a definite match. Maybe a slight reach at best.

UCB's average admit stats are around a 2050 SAT and 4.17 UC GPA. UCLA's average admit stats are around 2050 SAT and 4.12 UC GPA. UCSD's average admit stats are around a 1950 SAT and 4.04 UC GPA. These three schools are in the reach range. Your minority status will help you with Cornell, not so much with UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD.

UC Berkeley: Reach (in state)
UCLA: Reach (in state)
UCSD: Slight Reach (in state)
Cornell: Reach (minority status helps, possibly makes Cornell a slight reach)

What I found offensive was use of the specific words: "greet fellow students by raising your hand and saying "How."" This portrays Native Americans in a demeaning manner and perpetuates stereotypes that were created by Hollywood.

blah... scansmom needs to stop being so offended so easilly... political correctness in this country began as a good thing that was needed... but when not even a simple phrase can be said without individuals like scansmom butting in and making a big deal about it... thats ridiculous. stop being so politically correct and lighten up a bit... and this is coming from someone who has a small percentage of american indian in him. i would understand your frustration if an offensive comment or racial slur was used.... but freaking out over a minor phrase like 'how' is ridiculous. seriously this type of political correctness by individuals is ridiculous and sad.
