Im a californian

hey guys my ACT is 30 (M30,CR32,30 w/ writing, science 25 :[ ). My SAT is M750,CR620,W680..which one is better to send or should i send both..SATiis dont matter at umich anyway but i got 740iic 760 chinese. I will most likely have a great teacher rec and I have strong ECs (vlonuteering at an organization with disabled children 200+hrs, first violin youth symphony 5yrs, student govt 2 yrs, and a major service club on campus 4 yrs.)..SO what are my cahnces, keep in mind im a CA kid haha thanks!

also i am taking SAT and ACT again for other schools, nov and dec respectively. should i just go ahead and send my scores i already have (stated above) and get with the rollaing admissions program or wait longer..is it really beneficial to send in app early? thanks

I would send in your SAT, but your ACT is also fine. Apply as soon as possible.

is earlier that much better? whats the reason for it, just curious..can anyone else evaluate my chances?

Earlier is definitely better for borderline cases. What's your unweighed GPA, not including Freshman year.

my u/w gpa is sadly 3.6 but this yr im taking all my senior classes plus others (10+ courses) at a local community college thru a selectivre program offered for our high school students. also, i know to get into a good UC out of state is pretty hard but how bout umich for out of state? or uiuc? if i have a great solid rec from bio ap teacher (im planning to do biological sciences/premed) will that signifacntly help me (in other words, does umich place lots of emphasis on recs?)

Your GPA is ok, your SAT/ACT are in the range. Michigan is a match for you. Recs, although important, do not carry much weight at Michigan, nor do ECs or the essays. The unweighed GPA is by far the most important criterion(Michigan's mean is roughly 3.75, probably a little higher for out of staters) and SATs/ACTs are a distant second. So you are obviously in the range.

And Michigan is not as tough on out of staters as the UCs because unlike the UCs, where only 5% of the the students are out of staters, at Michigan, 35% are out of staters. Secondly, although Michigan is as good as the best UC schools, it is not as popular with out of staters for obvious reasons (geography and weather).

thanks alexandre, so would u say i have a great chance at umich if i send my app in around early november? u said that the SAT/ACT is a distant second compared to u/w gpa so should i just send my SAT and ACT scores now when i apply early nov or should i wait til i retake SAT (3rd time) and ACT (2nd time). THanks for the helpful advice above

No, I did not say you would have a great chance. I would say Michigan is a match for you. Your GPA is in the lower end of the Michigan range, and like I said, Michigan really weighs the GPA heavily. Your SAT/ACT are slightly higher than the mean, but not by enough to make a huge difference. And this year, assuming the trend of the last 2 years holds up, Michigan is going to be more selective than usual. So if anything, Michigan could even be a slight reach for you.

So no, your chances are not "great", but they are realistic. I would definitely apply to Michigan.

so can the teacher rec and essays make up for my slightly lower gpa? or is the gpa extremely huge and I probably cant do much to increase my chance of accaeptance

Recs don't really help that much. But if your school is really tough, a 3.6 GPA may be given extra weight. What is your class rank? Do many students from your school go to top universities?

our school doesnt rank students and it is ranked third or 4th in CA (my school is incredliby competative), i dont think a lot of our school's students go to umich, they usually go to UCs..for example 30 went to berkeley, 30 ucla, 3 upenn, 4 stanford, 3 harvard, etc stuff like that and students get overlapping acceptances to great top schools.

I am currently doing ALL my senior classes at a community college and was accpeted to partcipate in their honors program..hopefully this bit will make me stand out a bit (only 4 ppl from my school are doing this progarm where we all take just college courses not HS courses. 30 ppl are doing it total)?

i know u said the recs dont help much, but I am pretty confeident I will get a super rec from my bio teacher and maybe that can push me over the borderline? thanks for all ur input. if u need more info to get a better idea of me pleases ask. Im definatley gonna apply now

Dude, Alexandre. UAE WHAT WHAT!!! (Sorry, I visit about once a year, and I enjoy Dubai a lot).

im not sure if this may help admissions, but im taking all my senior yr courses at one of the top community colleges in nation and also in their Honors Program. SInce i spend a whole lot of time at the college, I decided to take on a role in the student govt by appointment of the student council. I was in student govt junior yr, but since im not at high school anymore as a senior, i dedided to continue leadership in college

bump? thanks

I think you'll get into michigan. Your ACT/SAT is good, and with the strong courseload you've been taking (at your top-ranked HS and CC), you'll be fine. Don't slack on the essays, though. It's my personal opinion that these matter more than people think. They may not say it, but if you can tell them who you are, what you'll bring to michigan, etc etc, I think they definately give them a considerable amount of weight.
