Hi there! I am an international student that is a Junior in high school intending to double major in Cinematic Arts and Broadcast Journalism! What are my chances as an international student? Are there a lot of undergrad international students? Does the school offer merit based financial aid for international students? Really hope to get into USC but can’t afford it ): It’s like my dream to be a Trojan

debbiegene,
I know this is dreamupsided0wn’s thread, but I’m an prospective student too, & I’m international. USC actually has the most international students in the US. Unfortunately there is no financial aid for internationals, but we’re eligible for the big merit-based scholarships, some of which cover full tuition, but not room & board. Also, there is a minor in Cinematic Arts, but no major.

Oh! I didn’t know that! Thank you so much for clarifying that! I guess then ill do a major minor then (: All the best, I hope you get in!

Thank you, same to you! :)

debbiegene - to clarify, there is a general minor in Cinematic Arts as well as other more specific minors like Screenwriting, but there are majors in Cinematic Arts Production, Cinematic Arts Critical Studies, etc. And LayraSparks is correct, I think international students only qualify for merit aid. After your first year you can also apply for merit scholarships from SCA.

I am a rising senior in high school and want to attend USC’s SCA Film & TV program. Here are my credentials:

3.8 GPA

29 on the ACT (going to be taking the test two more times, though)

Will have taken 4 AP courses throughout high school and 1 Honors course

Vast amount of awards/recognition (some being in film and photography) throughout high school

Very knowledgeable about directing and editing since I have made films throughout high school.

Internship (2013 Summer)

Helped out with a professional short film (2013 Summer)

Enrolled in film program (2012 Summer)

Involved in a good amount of extra-curriculars: clubs, community service, sports

I may be forgetting something, but this list is a good starter list.

I am extremely passionate about film and will do whatever it takes for success.

If I have a good application, do you think I have a good chance? What would you say is the most important aspect of the USC’s SCA TV & Film application?

I would appreciate any other comments about this program (or even USC’s BCA program - Business and Cinematic Arts joint program).

Thanks so much.

You’ve posted this on three different threads. Please see Madbean’s very thoughtful and comprehensive answer to your question here:

The only reason for posting it on 3 threads was because I wasn’t sure if people were still looking at the threads. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

LookingUp8 - to be honest I don’t really know what makes a good application as I don’t work for admissions… work really hard on your portfolio? :P

Hi again! I’d like to ask what you included in your Cinematic Arts personal statement (for CS). Was it all film related or more general? So was it like an official, serious personal statement that you write for the general application, or more focused on film experience or why you want to do films? Also, how long should it be? Should it be reminiscent of the autobiographical character sketch in the WSTV application, where they ask you how you became who you are? I’m finished with the rest of the supplement, but I’m really not sure about this part…

LayraSparks - obviously there are multiple ways of going about this, but here’s what I did:

USC (general) personal statement - I wrote about how I spent a day as an extra on set of a huge blockbuster and how it differed from my expectations.
SCA personal statement - I wrote about how I’m really into studying languages and the connection between written/spoken language and visual language, and my upbringing in the country where I was born and in the US. I think there was a second personal statement of some kind when I applied where I wrote about how I love horror movies. Or maybe I wrote about both in the same one - can’t quite recall, but I know I definitely wrote about horror movies too.

I think it’s open-ended on purpose, ie. there’s no right/wrong way to do it. I think mine was about 1-2 pages? Hard to say, it’s been a while.

I’m going to be a freshman in college come fall at CMU [carnegie mellon university]. I have only recently found my passion for film. I want to transfer to usc for film but in order to do so I would have to have a portfolio already - correct? I know I could definitely make the supplements but since I just found my love of film should I rush and make several short films now? Also, do you know the rate of acceptance for transfers for the film program? Thanks!

My D was accepted into USC undeclared as a transfer and then she chose to major in cinema and needed to create a portfolio. It would have saved her time and semesters if she initially applied with portfolio into SCA. Ask SCA what’s required in portfolio, as they have specific requirements.

SFFFFS - neat! I almost went to CMU. One of my close friends just graduated from there.

It really depends on the major you want to declare… the programs all have different requirements. And I don’t think they reveal the acceptance information, but I did read on their site once that 1/3 of SCA students are transfers.

I would like to do film and television production! I am going to try and get my portfolio ready, but, I have some questions. It’s so annoying since I only have 7 posts I can’t PM you, so I’m going to go and try and post some things so I will be able to haha.

SFFFFS - well, you don’t necessarily have to create short films as there is also a photo option.

Best of luck in the coming weeks, entering class! :*

hey
im from India and i really wanna get into USC SCA MFA FILM/TV PRODUCTION.thoughts? advice?

thanks in advance

@filmschoolindian

Advice? Have a back-up plan. The application rate is huge. Acceptance rate is about 4% and I think (but don’t quote me) there is no waiting list. When I was there a few weeks ago, the final enrollment numbers for SCA was lower than the actual number of spaces. I suspect those will be filled with transfers.

So focus on portfolio, but also your qualifications for the main USC campus because you have to be accepted by them too. If not accepted to SCA don’t assume you can attend USC and transfer since those numbers are also low and production is now a BFA program.

Put together your best application, be yourself (not what you think they are looking for), create your strongest portfolio and cross your fingers.

^^^ solid advice!
