Okay financially, I'm at a HUGE disadvantage. And I will leave it at that. If it weren't for my school's scholarship, I won't be in such an amazing private school.

Now to my chances. Please be BRUTALLY HONEST. No sugar coating. I need a realistic picture of where I can get into. I want to do International Relations btw. These are the school's I'm looking at. I will narrow it down so don't worry..

I really need to be chanced. Please help me out here!!

Only know the American universities, so
NYU - high match
Yale - reach
Dartmouth - high match/low reach
Stanford - reach
UChicago - reach
Amherst - low reach
Swarthmore - high match
Tufts - match
Lafayette - match
Cornell - high match/low reach

Your racial status is highly uncommon, and very interesting. That said, I wonder if colleges may or may not view you differently based on that. However, most American universities don’t really give out FA to international students, so look for schools where you’d get a full ride. Good luck!

NYU Abu Dhabi- IDK
Yale University- High Reach
Dartmouth College- High Reach
Stanford University- High Reach
University of Chicago- High Reach
Yale-NUS College- IDK
Amherst College- High Reach
Swarthmore College- High Reach (They are need aware for international students but if admitted, they meet full need)
Tufts University- High Reach
Lafayette College- High Reach
Cornell University- High Reach

The reason why most of these are high reaches is because a lot of them are need aware for international students. If you are in high need, they are less likely to admit you. Academically, American students get prioritized over international students as well. So even though you are academically competitive, since you are not an American student, it will be harder for you to get in. It’s good that you have Amherst and Dartmouth on your list. You should look at the 6 need blind schools that meet full need in America

I think you would be a great fit at Yale and you certainly are well above the academic threshold.

Yale gives need based financial assistance to all students including foreign students. Take advantage of the Yale Young African Scholars Program (in Ghana, I assume) to learn about the school and to make a connection with the Yale faculty who will be teaching there since Yale allows additional letters of recommendation.

Something you might find interesting - Yale offers students on scholarships “institutional money” to do overseas programs/experiences which often are based in high need locations. This is the kind of info you need to extract about Yale and then weave into your application essay. If you think you are an honest “fit” at the school AND you can convey that to Yale AND the people recommending you back that up, then I think you have an above average chance at Yale.

thank you so much @keesh17!! I did not know about the overseas program. That would be a great experience especially since I am interested in development and international relations. Do you think you can tell me a bit more about this? Also for the additional letters of recommendation you mentioned, is it possible to ask the faculty I meet during the program to write me a letter, if I feel it is needed?

@AnnieBeats thank you for chancing me! Yale is also need based. NYU Abu Dhabi is the new NYU campus. Apparently they give student’s financial aid and they are a very good school…many say it may one day surpass the some of the famed universities of the world. I have looked at the rest of the need blind schools…Harvard, Princeton and MIT are the ones left. I don’t think I’m Harvard, Princeton or MIT material, which is why they are not on the list. I am not sure how far I should push myself with the schools I am applying to. I feel my list is already very risky. What do you think?

I just got an anonymous request to edit some of the content in my post. A lot of people seem to really take the word “founder” seriously. Well, I am here to say, that I am not the founder of the Writer
s Club and just to be safe Model Global Summit, since I don
t want any future problems with my peers. Other than that I have done EVERYTHING on this list. I have volunteered day in day out with many places, and have future job placements for my final year which I am yet to complete. I wish there was a way to edit posts, but apparently you cannot. Oh yeah the Math Olympiad thing. I guess I should take that out, since at that time I was sure of helping out, but I decided not to. Hope I cleared the air for all of you

NYU Abu Dhabi’s acceptance rate is 2.1%. It’s the most competitive school you’re applying to (at least out of the US-based options). It’s in no way a “match” or even a “high match.”

lei - Here is a link to the Yale International Summer Award program <a href=“Yale College”>Yale College;
