I'm a junior, but I guess I'm overly concerned with college. I don't even know what would be a target school for me, let alone a reach or anything. I know this will be a stretch no matter what, but I was wondering if it's even worth applying:

SATS:
580 in math
770 in critical reading
800 in writing

Freshman year I went to a school where every class was honors, but then I transferred out because it was an environment I wasn't comfortable in and as it was a specialized school, I felt much too confined.

When I went to public school, I took all regular classes except honors English and History.

Now, as a Junior I'm in honors history, AP European history and AP English. Everything else is regular.

My UW GPA is about a 3.4 as of right now. I haven't been told my weighted, though, but I can't imagine it being terribly higher.

I'm the secretary for my school's GSA, the founder of my school's S.T.A.N.D chapter, and managing editor (editor-in-chief hopeful!) at my school's paper. I also have volunteered twice a week at a nursing home for over two years.

After I write all this out, it seems I'm not even close to being a contender.

My advice--stop worrying. Get that math SAT up a little and you'll have a fantastic shot at many great schools, Vassar included. As for now, study a little and don't get yourself worked up over colleges so early.

Exactly. I'm a senior right now (RD applicant), and I have a lot of stuff in common with your stats/profile. If it's worth it for me to apply, then it's worth it for you to apply.

I'm really just worried about my grades, I think! But thank you for the reassurance, you're probably right. There are a lot of downsides to having mostly senior friends!

And I wish you the best of luck, (Z)! Let me know what happens!

you don't have too much to worry about as of now. just keep studying and do your best to bring your grades and scores up, as you'll then stand an even better shot at vassar. not to sound disconcerting, but i applied last year to vassar ED with a 3.4GPA and an ACT score of 28 or 29 (can't remember). neither of my numbers looked particularly good for vassar's usual applicant pool, something that resulted in my rejection. i had a lot of passionate ECs and leadership positions and unique essays and recs, but it really comes down to grades in my experience. i applied to several other top schools and was rejected, except for oberlin and conn coll.

but don't worry now! you still stand a shot! just do your best

Your ECs sound great. I think that they will really help.
Your SAT math IS a little low--but I was in the same position with pretty high CR and W and low 600's for math. If you bring it up thirty points I think the SAT is fine. (And you don't have to worry about re-achieving your 800. Vassar super scores, which means they'll pick the best scores and it doesn't matter if they were on different test days).
Your grades ARE a little low. Accepted students generally have 3.7 (A-minus average) unweighted. I would say concentrate on trying to bring your grades up second semester of 11th and even 1st of 12th.
But, as to your original question, OF COURSE you should apply. You definitely have a shot, even if you applied right now with everything as is. Vassar also has a "your space" part of their app, so you can really showcase who you are as a unique individual without all the numbers. That's a really great opportunity to make yourself stand out--so maybe you should start thinking about what to do for that.
Good luck next year! I think you'll be fine

i was just accepted ED1 to vassar for the class of '13 and i just wanted to tell you from experience, if you really are set on going to vassar and if you find that vassar is perfect for you (as i did), then definitely WORRY. it definitely puts pressure on you and that is what you need. it makes you do things you never thought you could. i started out freshman year at my high school taking all the hardest classes mainly because i enjoy the challenge. well, i was doing alright (by the end of sophomore year i had a 3.65 gpa i think). however, this is the exact time that i found out about vassar and thought that this was the only place i could really see myself at. i mean, really every aspect took me in; the location, the beauty of the campus and its buildings, the size, and especially the general liberal (and slightly eclectic) atmosphere of the school. i realized that my gpa probably wasnt good enough, and this put alot of pressure on me. when i sent my transcript in this year including my first quarter senior grades i had a 3.8. i really think you could bump your gpa up as i did. your sat's are really really great. even though your math is a little low, im sure you would have no problem bumbing that up into the lower 600's. im not all that familiar with the sat's though. i took the act myself and since vassar also supercores the act i sent in all three of my tests for a 32 comp. score and a 9essay. if you apply early decision next year, im sure you would have a wonderful chance of acceptance.
