I'm a Lebanese refugee. Will this give me an edge for Ivies?

I know middle eastern is white, but I feel like my life story would compensate for not having a perfect rank etc.Not every applicant has been through a revolution or evacuated on an aircraft carrier. Hopefully this makes me stand out.I also plan on applying through Questbridge. Will this make a significant difference with my admissions to Harvard , Stanford, Yale, Duke ....

I'm Lebanese currently living in Arizona and my life story is interesting. I was part of a revolution ,evacuated on an aircraft carrier and I've experienced many other unique scenarios .I'm shadowing a geriatrician in Lebanon this Summer and plan on attending summer programs with the universities here.

I’m a US citizen before anyone asks lol

Without the Lebanese refugee part you already have a qualified application(assuming you do well on those SATs).
It is a good hook BUT on one condition. Colleges can care less if you are a refugee and putting that on your application alone will be meaningless. You MUST show colleges that being a refugee has changed you as a person, changed your character, actions, values etc. This is what would make it a good hook, otherwise it wouldn’t matter. I recommend you write your essay about your life experience and that it has shaped you into, I don’t know, being a dedicated student who strives to brake through the barrier.

Goodluck, you sound like you have a good chance!

Thumbs up on the refugee thing. It makes you a very interesting candidate.

Thanks for the insight guys. bump

It can be a great hook provided you write a great essay on it.

Dude you sound like the worst candidate ever. i think you should apply to your local community college. and dont bump ur own thread. flaming FTW

just kedding bro! ure gonna get in! ur story is good and we all know your smart as effe

Tehewikis advice is extremely helpful. Follow it carefully.

Adding your personal experience like revolution to your essays will be absolutely helpful.

Make sure the essay is compelling. If you didn’t have a unique refugee experience (the US takes a lot of refugees), it might not do much for you. Don’t write about it if you can’t produce an excellent essay about it. Definitely mention it, but it seems risky to me to use it as a theme in your whole application.

I know a lot of refugees because my wife is one, and based on what I’ve heard - they don’t get a lot of love from schools. There are very few scholarships aimed at refugees, and that probably reflects how much of a hook it would be.

Remember, being a refugee is something that happened to you. They aren’t going to admit you just because something happened to you. Make it more than that and abandon it if you can’t.
