Is it alright to send in the confirmation letter even though I'm still waiting on another college's decision (not till end-may/June..)?

I suppose it's the only thing to do, but do I write a note explaining or something????

The decision date is may 1 if you want them to hold a spot.

Are you looking to come off of a waitlist?

Ethically it may not be right. But you don't really have any choice. If you don't accept the spot and then you don't get into the other school you are waiting on, where will you go?

Do NOT send a note explaining. As a general rule, when people come off a wait list and change their mind, they simply forfeit their deposit at the first school they accepted. Dartmouth does not ask for a deposit, or at least they didn't last year, so you won't lose anything.

But if you do this, you should clearly let Dartmouth know as soon as you hear from this other college so they can take someone off their wait list.

If it is a waitlist, the instructions from the waitlist college usually tell you to reserve a place in another school.

No, I'm not on a waitlist, but in the same sort of situation.

I'm Singaporean, and my parents are hoping for me to go to Med school in Singapore (though I would much rather Dartmouth). But I will only know come June if I'm accepted, hence the question.

Thanks for the replies and advice, I appreciate them!

I'm from Singapore, too! One question. If I apply for one university, let's say A while asking for deferrment of two years for National service. However in the middle of the two years, I apply for another university, B, and get in. Though A has reserved a place for me, would I be allowed to just drop the deposit and go to B?

Bondof3,

I think the most important thing is to make sure that you do have a school to attend in the fall.

Since you will not be holding 2 spots at the same time, you should be ok.

Nadash,

You need to check the deferral policies at each school you are interested in before applying policies vary from school to school (you want to know the deferral policy before hand since it is your intention to defer)

At Dartmouth you can only defer for one year.

they also state:

*Deferred candidates may not initiate application to any other colleges or universities. Additionally, it is each deferred candidate's responsibility to write to the Admissions Office before January 1 to provide an update of experiences, activities, and course work, if applicable.

The Admissions Committee reserves the right to review the activities undertaken in the interim and to rescind the offer of admissions if a student's academic or personal record does not remain satisfactory in all respects.

If you indicate to the organizations who have given you a scholarship that you will be attending school A, and they send the checks directly to that school, but then you get off the waitlist at school B and decide to go there instead, will A be nice about giving back/transferring the money over?
