I'm desperate

I’ve basically done terrible during high school. I regret not trying harder because I know I could’ve done way better. I’ve maintained a 2.6 up until now but I’m planning on finishing junior year with a 3.8(weighted, 3.5 unweighted). I take the SAT in May, but I’m scared that I’ve lost my chance of getting into a good colleges. Are there any colleges in California or Arizona or anywhere on the west coast that would take me??

Your question belongs in college search and selection. Chances is just guessing games to see if people think you will get in certain places with your stats. Post on the search board. Realize that someone with a 2.6 doesn’t just jump to a 3.8 very often and it just sounds like a case of fooling yourself. Are in instate for CA or AZ? What can your family afford? What was your PSAT? Yes you will likely have to take what college you can get, and there is always a path via a CC. Some students just mature later when they realize that things do matter. Getting a higher gpa also means you are learning to work steadily and be in it for the long haul, which will serve you well in college. So

There are lots and lots and lots of kids in the US with a gpa of 2.6 who will be attending college. And, yes, they’ll be attending “good schools.”

Make an appointment with your guidance counselor/ college placement counselor. He/she will help you compile a list of schools that would be appropriate for you to apply to.

But do it soon. You’ll want time to research these schools, to see whether they have your major and are affordable for your family. And you’ll want time to visit to see whether you like them.

But rest assured: there are some choices that will be wonderful for you.

What is your home state and budget? Post your SAT scores and final GPA when they are available.

Hmm. I guess the thing here is what is a “good school”. In my opinion, you can’t expect to get into what I would consider a “good school” with a 2.6 GPA. In my opinion, you need to get that GPA up to at LEAST a 3.0 before you could even sniff a chance of getting into a “good school”. Grade inflation these days allows for some very average students to graduate with even a 3.5 unweighted GPA. Ohio State University (which is a “good school” but not elite by most standards) has an average GPA now of 3.6 for admitted students. All you can do now is work as hard as you possibly can to raise that GPA and hopefully do well on some standardized tests. I will tell you though that there are a bunch of mediocre schools that will take you, so if you want to go to college, you certainly can. You will just need to make the most of it once you are there. Do all you can to raise that GPA, but for now, the big state flagship colleges (ones that I would consider “good schools”) would probably reject you. Your target will be the more mediocre (not horrible) schools…unless of course you raise that GPA up a lot.
