go ahead,flame away.

Why should we flame you? One of my roommates takes philosophy and loves it. I admire people who can find meaning and enjoyment in deep thought...

Philosophy is marvelous. Have fun with it.

So am I.

(10char)

i love philosophy

Good for you!

Personally, I don't think I have the brain capacity...:)

I majored in Math/Econ in school, but we had to take a philosophy class, it is one class I remembered the most(25 years ago). Surprisingly, I met quite a few people in ibnaking who majored in philosophy.

I'm working on a Davidson's Fellow project in Philosophy ^^

I never knew there was any jobs for philosophers except being teachers. Rudy Giulianni minored in Philosophy from CUNY but he majored in political science which got him his political job. After all, Great philosopher Socrates was homeless for his entire life basically.

Are you that desperate for attention or something? I'm a philosophy major too, but I didn't announce it to the world and challenge everyone to "flame away." What are you going for with this post? Are you expecting negative responses so you can defend the wisdom of your decision? The cornerstone of philosophy is asking relevant questions and giving insightful answers, but from your post, perhaps you're not ready to major in philosophy.

^ ouch????

It's a slow season on CC...We'll have more to talk about come Oct.

Well maybe the OP is addressing the general skepticism and disdain in the American sense against those who major in Philosophy... because most just think its a waste of time with little use. I am seriously considering majoring in Philosophy myself, possibly a mix between Philosophy, World/European History, and International Relations (please, any comments or thoughts on this combination, please help)

How are you going to feed your kids??? I'll see you stealing ketchup packets from McDonalds...

Just Kidding. I really don't know how the job prospects are for philosophy majors.

^ they go onto law school? lol

Otherwise you either become a writer (extremely low chance that you can get out of poverty) or a teacher (slightly better chance)

Personally I believe philosophy is the most important field to human society, more vital to us than science, math, business, etc. But the fact though is, is that what is best for society isn't always what society wants (most of the time, infact)

Exactly what rootbeer says; then go to law school. I think you have an exceptionally bright mind to get into that deep of material. I took an intro class and it still went over my head so many times.

Alas, I suppose my major (history) doesn't have much more prospects for jobs than yours. Its really what you make of it.

Whats the difference between a 12 inch pizza and a (insert nonprofessional major) major? A 12 inch pizza can feed a family of 4.

Penn's philosophy department really isn't all that good though.

Well history and philosophy, like what others have mentioned, tend to be great foundations for other professions, such as business, politics, law, etc.

I'm applying for English.
I guess its the same??

You can go anywhere and do anything with this or any other field of study. It's such a misconception that you choose your life's path with your college major. For most people, there are many twists and turns in the road...

Just a little bit uncalled for. No, actually - a LOT uncalled for. It's just a casual post - how do you go from someone announcing their major to telling them they're not ready for it. Way to sound "elite!"
