Astrina, it seems like you're continually bashing a place that you've obviously never been to. Yes there are some cows (for research purposes, don't forget, UCD started as an agricultural university), but they're definitely not "everywhere" or "in the center" as you've described. I've been there many times and there's only a few on the outskirts of one part of the campus.

Secondly, you've yet to show one real reason as to how this affects UCD as a school at all. Honestly, I hope some of you decide to consider it! I can tell you firsthand that it really is a great town and school.

i grew up in sacramento, both my parents are UC Davis alums, my mom worked at the vet school, i've been to over a dozen Picnic Days, visited friends, restaurants, and the farmer's market regularly. unless you live in davis proper, i daresay i've spent more time there then you have.

i didn't say there were cows everywhere. i said relative to any other university in the state, davis has lots more. the students accept that. ever heard of bossy cow cow?

cows are in the geographical center of campus. you may define the more important areas of campus differently, but in the circle that is UCD property, the dairy is pretty damn close to the middle. UC Davis: Visiting: Campus Map

the cows might suck if you live in tercero or are a biology grad student (labs on either side of dairy), but it doesn't affect the majority of campus. i never said davis was a bad school. the cows are something the school (and the entire metropolitan area) laugh at. i applied to UCD for both undergrad and grad school, i can't hate the place if i did that, right?

I agree w/Astrina. We were there w/our son last summer for a campus tour and even the tour guide, a current student mind you, was joking about the cows and smells! He specifically stated to stay away from Tercero as when the wind picks up it blows the nasty smells right into the dorms! Yuck!! Thnik I would much rather smell the ocean breeze!

I have a friend who did undergrad there and said ucd animal science lab generates the most top notch meat! haha..

I thought UCD was a school with AGRICULTURAL and BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES roots and I'm pretty sure they lead the world in these areas.. I'm surprised that you guys seem all surprised with the pastoral culture there. I mean basically the Sacramento area is essentially flat plains and sunshine, perfect for agriculture and environmental studies and research for biological engineering (or whatever they do).

The United States is so successful today basically because of technological breakthroughs in agriculture and farming.

Astrina, you still haven't mentioned one good reason why someone wouldn't attend UCD. I'm afraid the presence of a few cows won't (shouldn't) convince anyone.

Like I said, it's extremely obvious you've never been there -- I've never seen cows in the campus, except for one border spot by Tercero.

Nonetheless, since you applied, you too must see how shallow your argument is.

...because i don't HAVE any compelling global reasons against attending UC Davis. my choices for turning down the campus (allergies, location, lack of big-city life at one's fingertips, boring weather, lower rankings in my field, fewer networking opportunities) are mine alone and i'm not going to push them on anyone else. if you thought cows were part of my decision, you thought wrong.

"it's extremely obvious you've never been there"
...
maybe if you actually READ my posts, something else would be obvious.

ahh, i see. since my perceptions and pictures of the campus don't match your memories, they must be flat-out wrong. and the campus map from davis' website must be wrong, too. my apologies.

and oh gosh, i TOTALLY forgot i'm in new york right now, and present geography totally invalidates my opinions of schools across the country. i must not be at all qualified to answer any questions on this forum then. whoops. i should probably delete my post under the forum's "featured discussions" list, too.

(apologies for snarkiness to everyone else. it's been a long day.)

Geeze... those New Yorkers can get pretty riled up eh?
[/quote]
It does seem that way.

Anyway, Astrina, no need to be sarcastic/rude. I'm simply pointing out that your facts are incorrect. That map you provided doesn't have anything in the center. As I've stated before, the cows are only in one small place at the edge of the campus (not that it matters).

Secondly, it's not "my opinions" that differ from what you're saying, it's facts that back I'm what I'm saying, since you're blatantly wrong and I'm not the only one to recognize it.

Anyway, all this is getting to be too much. Point being, UCD is not the lame/campus that you make it sound like, whether you admit you're trying to or not.

dmission, I believe the thread is titled: "I'm going to UCSD because..." Astrina has no reason to influence others in attending UCD rather than UCSD in this thread.
astrina really isnt trying to bash UCD. She made a comment about the cows, which clearly UCD is known to have. Yes?

I know. If you read my post I said: "UCD is not the lame/campus that you make it sound like, whether you admit you're trying to or not."

I'm sure you believe she's not doing it on purpose, but she is giving off a negative impression. "Cows." There's like 10 in one small spot.

How about if I start talking about the lack of social life and how UCSD is a commuter university and in a bad location of the city, but I'm still not "bashing the campus" right? No, of course not...

Like I said, this isn't very constructive.

My point's been made. UCD isn't a lame farm town that some of you seem to think. I truly encourage you all to visit before you decide on some other place.

"I thought UCD was a school with AGRICULTURAL and BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES roots and I'm pretty sure they lead the world in these areas.. "

Nah, UCD does not lead the world in the biological sciences. Look up any PhD ranking or the like and you'll find the schools that lead in the biological sciences are the usual Harvard, Duke, Stanford, JHU, UWash, and UCSD.

dmission - you are obviously pro UC Davis, nothing wrong with that but why are you on UCSD site at all anyway?!? You seem to be so negative towards UCSD yet you're on the site titled "Going to UCSD because...." and trying to defend UCD! Don't understand it! I think you need to pick another thread to voice your opinions etc..

University of Washington, not WashU at St. Louis.

"Anyway Davis is ranked ~ 20 in the nation for Biology, and 1st in Agricultural.
(considered very great school for those two programs)"

Source? Since there is no ranking for Biology at the undergraduate level, are you referring to the graduate level? If so, I'd be interested to see what you support your statement with.

As I was referring to the NRC rankings of PhD programs (only ranking sufficient as there is no undergraduate biology ranking), it seems that your statement is rather unfounded. The only time Davis is ranked above the 30's is in Ecology/Evolution/Behavior at spot 5. I guess this is somewhat related to Agriculture, but not really.

On the other hand, UCSD's presence in the top 10 is easily seen. Biology at UCSD is solid.
