I'm guessing Barnard's a reach, right? (+ NYU, GWU, etc.) I promise to chance back!

Hey. I've recently become interested in Barnard College and would like someone to confirm my speculation that it's a reach. I think I have enough reaches already and would really like to not add another. I'm probably in for a lot of disappointment come April.

Caucasian, female senior in HS
Average public school in PA

Courses 9th-11th: I definitely didn't have the most rigorous courseload possible :-/

Science - regular level (aka NOT Honors) all three years
Language - German 2, 3, and 4

Senior Courses - AP Biology, AP Economics, APUSH, AP German, Honors Humanities, Latin I, and Latin II (note: no math class or Physics senior year, as they wouldn't fit).

Recs: Okay, mostly about work ethic and respectfulness
Essays: Decent

EC's:

NHS
-won second place at the German Fallfest Competition at Millersville University
-scored in the 85 percentile on the AATG German exam
-working as a cashier at a supermarket for over a year, am about to start (trying) to get all the employees there to recycle. Haha, don't even know if that's mentionable

treasurer of Student Historians Club for two years
-worked with special needs kids and helped them do crafts/helped organize activities for them to do (during school for the past two years)
-"Walking Tour" I'm a tour guide for the elementary school kids (this year'll be my fourth). I take them to different historically significant landmarks in our town and explain why they're important.
-member of the Civil War Heritage Foundation (Civil War Reenacting organization in Gettysburg) for five years

member of the Harrisburg Blues Society for six years, again, don't know if it's mentionable. But I played guitar with them until school got in the way. It might just make me look too scattered, though.

Schools:

Barnard - What if I interview?
NYU CAS
GWU (worried because kids from my school with more rigorous courseloads are applying here, too. Don't they compare you to people from your school?)
UMD (OOS, applied EA)
U Rochester
UGA (OOS, Honors college? Someone told me no way...)
USC (reach, I know)
Emory
U Washington (OOS, really like their foreign language options. Is there any way to let them know so they don't think I'm applying to them just for the heck of it?)
BU
Pitt (Honors college)
Temple (safety)

I'll apply to however many I get to, but I think my list is a bit reachy. Any input? Am I pretty much destined to go to Temple or can I do some of these schools? Thanks.

Yes, Barnard is a reach. But they are the type of school that goes beyond the numbers, and if you interview, have an app that shows them you are the type of student they want, it is a definite possibility. It does not seem to fit your list, however, as to the type of college you would like. When will UMD let you know? The great thing about early apps is that you can elimate those colleges you like less than the one with the acceptance.

I don't think that UMD notifies much earlier about acceptances, since their early deadline is only Dec. 1st. Although Barnard is a small LAC, and I've pretty much disregarded those, I really like its location in NYC, and his has some good options for foreign languages. Do you know what kinds of students that it generally looks for? I'd definitely like to go for it.

Bumped off the first page this fast? :-o Any information I can get on ANY of these schools would be much appreciated.

OMLOG, c'mon folks! Any input? Any at all?

Barnard - Reach You should definitely get interviewed if you can
NYU CAS - Low Reach
USC - High Match
Emory - High Match
U Washington - Match
BU - Safe

This is my first attempt at chancing. I may be COMPLETELY off so take it for what its worth lol

Lol I like your chances! Thank you very much for the input. I just think that BU's a bit higher than a safety, though :-/

I am procrastinating so bad right now ><
