I'm in a some deep **** right now...

Ok well..I'm in the 9th grade. I take AP World History. Got a C last quarter which was a "gift" form my teacher as she calls it..and 2nd quarter (now) I have an F...Like literally...I'm getting an F this quarter...well from what my teacher says. I really want to drop to honors but I think if I drop out, colleges are still going to see that F then my whole entire aspirations for like Ivy's (except Princeton) are less then 0% getting admitted now. I'll admit it, I don't read the textbook, because when I "force" myself to read it..I don't absorb any of the material and it takes like 6 hours just to read 1 chapter. 5 pages = 1 hour.

My parents are so gay too. There like, were going to take the computer or whatever away if you don't remove that F form your transcript then I am like ***. My course list is with the idea of what I will be getting for this quarter is:

Math 10H - C+/B
English 9H - B/B+
Gym - A/A+
Earth Science - B/B+/A
AP World History - F
Design and Drawing for Production - A/A+
Digital Photo - A+
Computer Programming - B+/A/A+
French - B/B+

My parents are always like, be like your sister (3rd year at Columbia) and I am like.."Stop the F^CK comparing me to her!" I'm not like her. Truth be told, I wanted to go to like NYU Tisch for like art or something and become a visual effects artist. I edit photos and videos like you know, putting the lightsaber effects in a video like star wars and stuff on my free time.

Since my dad is a pharmacist, my parents want me to be a pharmacist or a doctor and they said I can do whatever the hell I want after I get my professional degree because they say, if you don't have a professional degree, no job employer will hire you or you won't get any employees. So because of there choice of planning my life out, I wanted to go to Stony Brook because it has a pretty good pre-med program and a awesome medical school but then my parents are like...don't put your expectations so low. Then i go ballistic then just so you guys are so stupid (I do really say they are idiots and stupid..I just can't respect them because they are so ignorant don't check the facts)

Now I really don't know what to do anymore. I would drop out of AP World if the F does not show up in my transcript but if it does then I am just going to cry that I would be working as a janitor/or at McDonalds for the rest of my life..

My quarter 1 grades were:

Math 10H - D
English 9H - A
Gym - B (ik *** lol)
Earth Science - B
AP World - C
DDP - B
Digital Photo - B+
Computer Programming - A
French - B

[EDIT] - Please don't say that my life won't be over because I guess my parents manipulated me so much that it will..

Seeing as your a freshman, there are many schools that don’t even look at freshman grades. So for exmaple, if you get your grades up next year, your GPA will be a solid 4.0 (if you get strait A’s throughout the rest of high school)
and you will be competitive with everyone else. I know for sure that all of the UC’s don’t look at freshman grades, but I’m not sure what other schools don’t.

Tough Love:

I think the problem is that you signed up for an AP class when you probably shouldn’t have. At most schools freshmen, except under rare circumstances, are not allowed to take AP classes since they lack the preparation and experience to deal with a rigorous courseload. I think that it was your lack of life experience that caused you to just give up.

Though I doubt it literally takes 1 hour to read 5 pages (unless you have a reading disability or are just incredibly lazy), I think that you should have broken up the reading assignments into doable portions. Don’t try to read a chapter in a night if you can’t. That is something that students will learn over time. Another thing that more mature students learn is when to take breaks. If you find that you are no longer making progress in an assignment, take a reasonable break and come back to it.

You REALLY need to learn these skills or else you will continue to struggle throughout high school. Especially because you will need to do MORE AND MORE reading to complete your coursework.

Ehhh I would only plan on going to NYU Tisch if you are REALLY good at something and want to pursue that as a career. Anyways, I think you really need to change your attitude towards your parents and your sister. When your parents encourage you to be like your sister they simply mean to be successful. They’re not trying to say that you should pursue the same interests as your sister. Your parents are just trying to help you and you clearly need help to turn your grades around. It’s not a big deal and you don’t need to feel angry or anything like that. A lot of people have bad a academic freshmen year.

Shot at the Ivies or any Good Schools:
I think that you’ve definitely hurt your shot at going to almost any good school. When most people have poor academic freshmen years they mean getting like a 3.0-3.5, not actually failing a course or having D’s. You need to work on your work ethic and come up with a strategy that will help you succeed. If you actually want to persevere and not give up like you did in AP World History and continue to pursue the dream of going to a top school, you need to have straight A’s 2nd semester or else you’re done. I know you have A’s right now but those are all in elective courses and don’t really count for much…

Good Luck

EDIT:
Also you’re a freshmen, you shouldn’t even be thinking all that much about colleges. Just get good grades to get good grades. It’s a lot less stressful when you approach school with that sort of mentality.

I’m in a similar spot, I’ve got straight As, even in hard classes, except for my one Accelerated Geometry grade. It’s a 77, but that’s only from homework bringing it up. I haven’t passed a single test/quiz this quarter! I’ve got a test on Tuesday, which I am so nervous about, it could bring me right back to an F. Luckily, my parents understand and continue to insist that I can get into any college that I want to even though I know better than to be that naieve.

Wow… I’m struggling with AP Art History… but that’s the only class and I have High A’s in my other 6 classes I’m currently taking. (5 of which are honors)

At the end of the year I will probably have like a 4.7/3.8 or so… with like a C in Art History…

Bottom line: don’t take an AP freshman year, no matter how smart you think you are.

Man up and start doing the work. Your chances at getting in to a top school are not entirely gone if you decide that now is the time to turn a new page.

“Bottom line: don’t take an AP freshman year, no matter how smart you think you are.”

I think that the OP goes to a school where all honors are AP classes…there is a school in NY on LI that is reknowned for this ( and also for getting students into alot of great top 20 schools because of the # of AP’s offered)…It’s either AP or regular; no honors offered…

Just a little side note, OP. Be careful about your obvious intolerance: “My parents are so gay…” That is definitely not going to win you much sympathy in the world of higher education. You need to change a whole lot about your perspective. It’s good that you are only in 9th grade at present. Presumably you will grow up in the next two and a half years.

Good luck man, really hope everything works out.

To Rodney, I ain’t THAT smart. My school offers regular, honors and AP. In middle school I excelled at S.S and was recommended to take AP like the other 30 students who are in the class.

Franglish - Sorry but they **** me off so much that I have no self-control over myself..

Newjack88- I know..I hurt myself bigtime. Wonder how hard it is to get into St. Johns for pharmacy hmm..

I don’t know what to do…
Alpha - Yeah I actually am doing the work now actually..I’ve been using Microsoft one note and been summarizing each section instead of summarizing the whole chapter.

My two cents here as a Mom,

Franglish—OP is a kid, don’t take him out to the shed for common language used by kids. OP is what 15/16? cut them a break.

OP, ask your folks if you can go out to dinner and talk to them…it sounds as if you don’t want what your folks want and this is your own way to rebel…now, this is what I suggest, get the grades up, you are worrying too much about what they want, once you get into a college life can change, but by your own ommission you are not working at your grades, you must ask yourself why?

If it is rebellion, grow up…do not BOFF yourself by not studying.

If the courses are 2 hard go to school on Monday and have and appt with the guidance counselor. Explain the sit., counselors are great mediators and can help you out.

I think you are doing what I did as a kid, following my parents dream, in the end you will have resentment…remember 1/3 of your day will be at work, make sure that is what you want

Yeah, your parents must be really awful. They put food in your mouth, clothes on your back, a roof over your head…OMG they might take away your computer? What a bunch of snakes, move out IMMEDIATELY.

^^ I agree.

Your parents have every right to punish you for being lazy. They want you to succeed, how horrible!

Read the book at get your grade up rather than whining about it.

I would say continue to stick with your AP classes. Sorry to agree with the rents, but you shouldn’t set your expectations low. You should want to do well in school, but for yourself. My little sister is a Freshman right now, kind of same situation. SO not true that you can’t get into a good school (there are many AWESOME schools beside the ivy league BTW) because you messed a little freshman year. I had no idea about the game that is college admisisons when I was a freshman (let alone the value of CC), so kudos for even being concerned w college so young. Currently, I feel like my SAT scores rule my life, so if you want to feel good when you take your SAT for the first time, start prep now, but leisurely. Introduce yourself to it and work on it more in the summer. Set goals for YOURSELF and work towards them. Is it YOUR goal to get perfect grades, or just to excel in your passions? What do you want to get from your high school experience? Don’t give up and don’t let anyone in your life or on CC tell you that you don’t have a chance.

ok I’m not contributing here but
wait
WOAH
I think you go to my school.
■■■■■

no, seriously
those courses are at my school.
AP World in 9th grade? you had Kalmar last year? or Clemente?
I’d say Clemente if you’re having trouble with Gordon (this will make no sense to you if you aren’t in my school)
and math 10H and stuff
I heard Drawing for Design Production, Digital Photo

yeah you definitely go to my school.

lets check.
hmm.
what are our school colors and mascot?

^^ I’m not saying you guys don’t go to the same school, but those courses are at ALOT of schools lol.

What textbook are you using? When I took the course, we used World Civilizations: the Global Experience. It had this awesome companion site with outlines and multiple choice and stuff that helped with review. You might want to take a look at it even if you’re using a different book:

[Student Resources](<a href=“Site Retired”>Site Retired)

It might also help to get one of those AP testing guides to study-- like Princeton Review. It can’t replace your textbook, obviously, but it always helps me to see the material in lots of different forms.

roman…haha yeah i guess, but I haven’t heard of THAT many people taking AP World in 9th grade and Math 10H.
and he/she lives in NY
Its extremely possible its not the same school.
but now we’ll find out =P

It’s okay man, just learn the lesson and keep going. No regrets, past is past. Can’t do anything (except go kill yourself).
