I'm in... but don't have enough aid. Help?

I've been mostly trying to ignore thinking about this particular problem which is an ironic change of pace because I usually would think about this obsessively. Anyway, here goes:

So I got into the college I want to transfer to, which is great. But they gave me a scholarship that was MUCH smaller than I was hoping for (less than half.) I'm hoping it was a combination of less financial aid offered because I'm a) a transfer, b) the deadline was on the NCRD so they knew who was definitely coming and who was not, and c) my application was practically late because my professor sent the rec in the DAY BEFORE the deadline (even though she had had it done but whatever) and it takes a long time to get mail from where I was going to college to where I applied (VA -> WI.)

This school I'm thinking of transferring to is a tad more expensive but offered a FAR smaller scholarship. Plus, if I stay at my current college, I can graduate in 3 years really easily. I have already become mostly comfortable, I suppose, and the department I want to major in is pretty good.

But when the prospect of not being able to transfer arose, I panicked. I had been saying to everyone at my college that I might come back, I might come back, should I not be accepted or I not get enough aid or some other incident, but at the realization that I might definitely have to come back, I started to freak out. I guess you don't realize how much you want something until you get it -- or rather, don't get it.

So, any proposals as to what I should do? I'm conflicted. I don't want to be all, "Hey, any way to increase my scholarship offer?" because I am grateful to be getting some money, I really am. It's a gift, but you know... I'm just confused :/ I really thought my stats and grades were good enough for a better scholarship than I got. It could have very well come down to unfortunate luck-- practically late application, being a transfer, etc.

Other information that's probably important is that I do not qualify for need based financial aid. I also really need to decide a course of action very soon since I need to figure out where I'm going to college this fall, especially since I want to take summer school and would like to know where to send my credits to bg I'm waiting on one more school and maybe that will help... but I really had my heart set on this particular school and kind of neglected to think much of the other one once I set my heart on i.

Any thoughts on the matter would be most appreciated. Thanks a bunch! Sorry if this is completely incoherent; it's almost 4 am here.

Did you apply to any other schools? It's hard to get merit aid as a transfer?

Maybe you can compare aid awards?

I have no idea about Bowling Green's policies. Sorry.

Yes, I did apply to any other schools; I'm waiting on one right now. It is hard to get merit aid as a transfer, so I wasn't completely taken aback by the low award. I plan on comparing packages when the letter comes in :) I didn't apply to BGSU; I applied to Lawrence University in Appleton, WI. At least you got the right region lol :)

I'm going to call my prospective college and negotiate a potentially better scholarship offer. Even if it isn't for this year, it could be for next year. The worst they can say is no, right? :)!

It is worth a try.

Merit scholarships do tend to be much lower for transfer students than for freshmen. I know at my daughter's school the highest scholarships are for freshmen only and the largest transfer scholarship is considerably less than the largest freshman scholarship.
