I'm pathetically desperate. Help...?

Haha, thanks, soccerprep. I hate it how people think they have to have this weird 'hook' to get in.

Being hispanic is a hook? What and Why?

Nobody cares if your green, purple or orange. In the end it just comes down to your test scores, grades, rank, and EC's and maybe if you rescued a village from a terrible fire in Algeria then quite possibly yes. Other than that race is just a matter of diversity if the school you are applying to even considers such elements to be vital in their admission process.

"C)200 on the PSAT is not amazing, I agree. However, you have to remember that she did it on zero sleep or whatever and that getting around 96 percentile is around enough to be in the lowest group for the National Merits. Which does cut it. "
No..national merit is the top 1% of the state, in connecticut it's 221 last year, typically the highest state

"so as long as I write a little note explaining the score and I attach my ISEE's (which they would like to see if it describes my abilities a little better- I took it in August) I should be fine as far as that goes"
that's what i was refering to, so "you have got to start reading what I/others actually WRITE" , yes..i did read...

"I am really intersested to see what a Hotchkiss worthy student must do to get in.."
there is no Hotchkiss worthy student. Considering Hotchkiss' acceptance rate last year was a whooping 20% in an extremely self selectively competitive group, it's a reach for everyone.same goes to AESDC...it's just as much a crap shot as anyone getting into harvard (yes i know harvard's admit rate is 10% but it's pool is less self-selective as everyone applies to college but not everyone applies to BS) ...so saying that anyone has a "great" chance is just unrealistic...yes..i agree that OP has a chance, great chance? I think not...i just dont want to make OP feel optimistic and get totally disappointed later on

Anyway, my stats when i applied, as i remembered

97 percentile SSAT
English is my second language so toefl - 283
A Average
Calculus AB - 5 frosh year (i applied as a sophomore)
MENSA

EC:
School soccer team,
webmaster and designer for OISCA , hong kong chapter, a UN chartered organization
play violin, viola and double bass for orchestra
Boy Scout
Math team, President of Math Club
Hospital volunteer

Awards:
AMC 10: 130 AIME:7 (freshman year) almost qualified for USAMO using the lower grade rule

In-school scholarships
Royal School of music Grade 8 violin passed with distinction

again, as i said, AESDCH are reaches for everyone, as they were for me too....
also, even though i got into most of the AESDCH, i got waitlisted at taft... so taft really can be as competitive as the tops ,so dont count it as safety

Being Hispanic makes her a URM

Personally I think that doing the school visit and interview prior to acceptance is very important. You would have a stronger position when you answer the essay question about why you you would like to attend each particular BS. From your posting it appears that you may have the time since you aren't attending your current school every day. A phone interview would be a last resort; a better option would be to do face-to-face interview with regional representatives from the schools you are interested in attending. Good luck with your applications!

sorry about the double posting..tried to edit but instead reposted

Okay yeah your right bearcats. Sorry about that, I just assumed you were talking about my suggestion of writing a letter. I understand that AESD are high reaches for everyone/nothing is definetive. However, I do think that purpoisepal may have higher than average chances, atleast from the other stats that I have seen on CC.

I believe you are a strong candidate..i'm pretty shocked what people have to say.

Just because people on the forum tell you that you can't doesn't mean that it'll happen. Good luck with the process!

Bearcats- I might qualify for a national merit certificate. Top 1% is for the scholarship itself, but I think if you're in the top 5% you get some sort of recognition.

clz- Thank you. I'm pretty shocked, too, but CC people have been wrong in the past and they'll be wrong again. I'd rather them tell me I won't get in and then I do get in than the other way around, so I guess it's okay for everyone to be like "no you're gonna fail!" lol Well, not everyone. There are a few people (mostly parents, I think) who think I have a shot. Thank you to everyone who does! (And thanks to ppl who are being honest, but like, :p haha.)

So, I guess you are applying...does that mean you are doing all of your applications and giving teacher recs and stuff right away aka now?

bearcats-did you attend the meetings regularly? thats what i do so i listed it as a club.. you think thats okay? what did you do?

URM - schools want to be avaiable to all students and so they do a alot of outreah programs to areas where students may not know of the opportunities at boarding school. affirmative action has just been ruled illegal in school admissions, so you missed that hand out. the program was mainly to increase awareness for kids who couldn't afford it, etc. no offense, but this does not apply to wealthy new yorkers. doesn't work that way.

olivia - yes it does matter what sport you play. it matters what instrutment you play. you can't argue that. these schools have a lot of world-class orchestras and d1 teams to fill w/ their relatively small school population. especially as an 11th grader (filling in the holes and drop outs).

Blairt- It actually does work that way. When the New Yorker is upper middle class AND hispanic, it means that the boarding school gets to say they have another minority in their school and they don't have to give financial aid. The school saves money and looks more diverse.

If you play violin and you're bad, then that won't be any good. Being in All-state isn't impressive, Making nationals is though. This year I'm hoping in going past nationals(USAMO) for math, I know I can make it to AIME with ease.

Bearcats, that's a really low AMC 10 score...

My daughter goes to Miss Porter's and figures skates at the ISSC in Simsbury.
It has been tough figuring out rides there but it can be done. She does theatre instead of another sport.

Masterus, stop being so arrogant.
I don't care how good you are at anything; your personal skills are lacking.

masterus, **** , that was in 9th grade...

blairt if you are going with that opinion about how it matters so much what sport and instrument you play, what oh what are you going to do since you play the "boring" sports of soccer and basketball and play the violin? I suppose you will have to work on your tricept muscles even more, that way you can "play crew".

BUMPPPP bump
