Oh and mucho congratulations tien!

It's because I'm stunningly bored. Sooo bored that I'm browsing other forums.

Did I mention I'm bored?

Hey guys again. I chose Brown, and was settled on going there in the fall. UPenn decided, however, to challenge Brown and offered me a full ride. I still like Brown better than UPenn. But because of what just happened, my family and I have agreed that I should reconsider Penn to avoid debt. Stubborn as I am, I called Brown and filed an appeal in hopeless search of a solution. Has anyone done this before, and does it really work? But anyway, just the thought of not going to Brown makes me really depressed.

I am really bored today clearly, but I wandered over from Penn's forum cuz I wanted to see what the Brown People (hehehehe... sorry but that does not sound right.) had to say.

In response to the person who said Penn is too theoretical and not practical enough... YES. That's probably my one complaint about my school, well, my major in particular (communications)... I get almost all of my practical knowledge through internships and jobs (which Penn does a fine job promiting, by the way)... but is any liberal arts curriculum really any better? I can't imagine Brown is less theoretical.

Oh well. I like it here. :) Good luck, and trust me, you'll be happy with either school, because you're clearly qualified.

Wow, I just read your comment at Penn's column and now you're here already. You're too fast for me. Just kidding.

tien,

My son had to consider a lot of the same issues you are, especially concerning fin aid and Brown, great aid at three wonderful schools, and one full ride. He chose Brown regardless, and they did reconsider our aid based on tax return and out of pocket medical expenses. (They required that we submit those medical expenses directly, which I would not have known they needed if I hadn't pressed to know why the aid was so much better at other schools.) In any case, my son will have to borrow a fair amount more to attend Brown, but the parent contribution is about the same for all the schools now. Brown would NOT reconsider aid at all based on the offers from the other schools.

Thank you so much for the heads-up. This is really helpful.

I'm not asking for numbers, but is the financial cost of brown for you going to be high? Because free rides are hard to turn down, ESPECIALLY from such amazing schools as Rice and Penn. If Brown's cost is completely manageable, then go with the school that you feel is the best fit personally. If the cost really is an issue, then go with a full ride.

Johnnyk notes,"
I hope you're kidding or just mixed it up. Penn usually gets criticized for being TOO focused on practicality and not focused enough on more vague intellectual theory...just to clear it up."

Response: No, I wasn't kidding at all. Other than the majors offered at Wharton and in engineering, Penn is considered to be very impractical in their majors. Their majors are to prepare people for research oreinted careers. This was said by two of Penn's deans, whose names or departments I can't disclose. Even one of their veterinary professors noted that he would never higher Penn Vet grads because their education didn't prepare them properly for private practice. Honestly, I havn't heard a lot of good things about Penn other than that which is noted above.

I decided to stay at Umich if anoyne cares ;)

Hopefully my packet finds its way to one of the deserving waitlisters here.

That's great, maize. I was wondering, just in case you cared. Did you hear from Brown, or did you decide you like UMich better, regardless?

I was accepted for the fall semester, but I decided I'd rather stay at Michigan. I still love Brown, but the more I thought about it the more I didn't want to deal w/ transferring.

I'm trying to see some pictures of Brown campus. But since the virtual tour service on the web is not available, does anyone know of another way for me to still accomplish this task?

you can visit.

That's not the direction I'm going in. I knew I could visit, but money to buy the airplane ticket and getting off two jobs would be a problem for me.

this is probably one of the better sites

Thank you, dcircle. Those are cool websites, the one with the 3-D pictures especially.

so where are you going Tien?

I'm expecting to hear from Brown's Financial Aid Office tomorrow or the day after concerning my appeal. So right now I'm very nervous. It's been really difficult deciding between Brown and UPenn, and I don't think I can make a good decision this time. Instead of looking at it as a win-win situation, I've been seeing things the opposite way. I don't want to miss something that I'll regret later. However, I have to choose. Every time I read the posts from those on the waiting lists at both schools, I feel horrible. Did I mention that I'm really nervous? I think I need some tea to calm me down...

you cant lose either way...both are great!

best of luck. I hope you get some great FA from Brown becuase its your top choice but Penn has every potential to be as great as Brown as long as you let it.
