Alright so I've been told by my peers/friends/family to do the first essay to explain the reason for struggles/hardships by sort of discussing the topic. But when I discovered this forum, many of the essays on here are writing a story (narrative) to do this. I'm basically discussing and describing, not storytelling. Am I doing it wrong?

What exactly do you mean by that? It might not be a good topic.

I must be high or something; I have no idea what I posted. Basically, can we directly address the topic? Or are we supposed to write a story to address the topic indirectly?

It depends on what you mean by “address the topic directly.” It’s fine to have a straightforward writing style as long as you avoid the following (for the most part):
- Making broad generalizations.
- Repeating the prompt. (“My application would be incomplete without the story of…”)
- Acknowledging that you’re writing an essay. (“This essay will discuss…”)
- Writing in a five-paragraph format.
- Repeating yourself. (As in “this is what I’m going to tell you” - “this what I’m telling you” - “that is what I told you.”)
- Not revealing anything of who you are.
- Being boring.

You can do either one; just make sure that you answer the prompt. I’ve seen them done both ways.

It should be written in a style the draws the reader in, and should be something that only you could write.
