I haven't even started essays or filling out applications for my transfer in Fall 2006. In fact, I'm not 100% sure where I want to apply. I know for sure that I want to apply to Columbia, NYU, and UPenn (how are my chances at these places???). But I'm also terrified that I will be rejected from all the schools and stuck in Miami (OH) for another year. I'm wondering if there's any school you can suggest that is still close to elite but can be a kind of "safety" for me. I really want an urban environment where I can get real world experience and an intellectual community where I can use my full potential.

High School Stats:

4.566 GPA (2 out of 175)
1340 SAT
32 ACT

College Stats:

Honors Program (400 students out of 3300)
4.0 GPA (through one semester)
classes: History, Honors English, Honors Psychology, Astronomy, Philosophy
next semester classes: History, Political Science, Spanish, Theatre

yeah I know my SAT isn't great...I concentrated much more on the ACT for some reason. I talked to a Columbia transfer advisor and she said that they take whichever score is higher. Will my SAT hurt me that much in admissions?

It's not required.
I think NYU will take you for sure, and you have chances at the other schools too.
The last time I applied I started filling out my application 5 days before the deadline and I finished my essay the day before, so no worries.

Ah, the urban environment. If there is one thing I am ****ed about in the world, that would be that I can't apply to Columbia College. Damn age discimination.

Right now I'm considering Columbia, NYU, UPenn, Brown, Case and either Northwestern/Washington U/U Chicago. Which ones are reaches, possibles, and definites. Should I look somewhere else as well? Thanks for all the help so far!

Sman, I do not think your SAT scores are really going to be that consequential. I think you have very solid chances are all three of the schools you mentioned, notwithstanding your SAT scores. Clearly, all three of these schools are extremely competitive to transfer into, so you will do well to find safeties. However, in order to provide you with a list of suitable schools, we need to know what you wish to study, or at least some disciplines you are considering.

My advice:
Absolutely do not sweat your SAT score. In the event that an admissions officer has reservations about your application on account of your scores, I am confident that their worries will quickly be allayed when they flip to your ACT scores. Moreover, this is not freshman admissions. You've already proved yourself quite capable of college work (viz. a 4.0), so I seriously doubt that they will cavil about your SAT scores (especially because they reguarly accept freshman applicants at all three of these schools with similar scores).

Instead, focus your attention on writing excellent applications and researching safeties.

I really do need to find some safeties and I'm hoping you or someone else can help me!

I'm currently a History/Philosophy double major and plan on entering law school in the future. I definitely plan on staying with History and may drop Philosophy...I'm not entirely sure.

Oh.. I missed the ACT score. Don't send SAT, just ACT. You've got a shot, I'd say. Macalester is a good LAC in a city. UChicago is similar to Columbia but easier to be accepted to. Northwestern is another very good university in Chicago. New College of Florida is cheap, good, in Sarasota, FL, but maybe too wacko for you. You could def get in. If you're not sure where you want to go, it might be best for you to wait another year and apply as junior transfer. That way you could become more involved in your campus community and build up your resume, increasing your chances of acceptance, and maybe you'll mature and find out what you want to do. These schools aren't going to fall of the face of the earth, and your potential isn't going to disappear over the course of just one year.

Definitely just send the ACT, my S got into most all his schools using his ACT and is currently at Pomona. Most all scools accept it, there are a few that require SAT II but most will use the ACT in place of it, check each website
