I cant decide where to go to school and I’m getting really nervous because I dont know how I am going to choose a school.
I was accepted to: Northwestern, Rice, Tufts, Wash U, UCLA(honors program), UCBerk and UCDavis (Regents Scholar)
I have basically decided I am going to go to one of the UCs because the privates are too expensive and I dont know if i want to be that far from home. So now I’m down to UCLA, UCBerk and UCDavis. I like them all for different reasons. I’m from norcal so I’m about an hour from davis and 20 minutes to Berkeley. I have a few friends at Cal and lots at Davis but none at LA.
I can’t decide if the Regents scholarship and Integrated Studies program make Davis worth turning down LA and Berk. I’m not too crazy about the campus of Davis but its a nice distance from home and the people are cool.
I know I’m not really wild about the city of LA, but the campus is really nice. I’ve heard its a pretty superficial school, but I don’t really think thats true. The honors program seems good, but not anything phenomenal.
I love berkeley, I’ve been a cal fan since the womb, but I didn’t get any honors offers there and I’m worried its a little too close to home, I want to have a new experience.
I don’t know what I want to study yet, so that cant really be a factor in my decision. Does anyone know anything about the Regents Program or have ANY INPUT WHATSOEVER. I just keep going over these things in my head, and I honestly think I would like all of them, but I have no gut decision leading me one way or the other. PLEASE HELP thanks

First of all : Congrats to you!!!! Fantastic options. My nephew is in grad school at Northwestern and I am leaving tomorrow to go visit.

My 2 cents:
Your intended major and future plans are an important consideration in choosing.

Then, I would think financial sense is important. Do you need to save up for grad school?

I also think getting a bit away from home is an invaluable growing experience. I'd really recommend it, although UCB is a wonderful experience in itself.

Also, I think , environment plays a factor. Some folks thrive on a competitive environment. Others become disenchanted with the fantatical overacheivers and grade-grubbers.

Tough decision, I wish you all the best. Remember that transferring isn't the easiest route, but it can be done. So, don't feel like it's a life sentence.

Best of luck to you. Hope you will post your decision.

thanks for the advice, I have no idea what I want to do, I like math/ science and writing so it could really go any way.
I do want to go to grad school, so thats why im considering the Regents.
I dont know if i thrive on competition or if I would hate it, I like a litle healthy competition but dont like to be too pressured

I think u should go to Davis-haha I guess I'm biased b/c I am going there next year. But honestly you got a good scholarship there and it seems like it is an environment where you can suceed w/o too much pressure or competition if that isn't your thing.

At UCB, competition can become intense. At UCD, there is definitely competition, but you seem to be already up there. There are a lot of successful UCD gradautes, as you know, and the environment is a lot more friendly (imo).

Your choice is particularly hard because you aren't shooting for graduate school. This basically means the college you choose will hang onto you forever. If you are one who wants the name, go to UCB (since a lot of people who want the name seem to go there). I'd personally choose UCD with regents over UCB, but UCLA is killing the mix. I can see where you are having troubles choosing... One thing for sure is you will have a great time anywhere you go. Good luck.

I too was about 20 min from Berk, and an hour from Davis. My older sister opted for Berk, got an apartment off campus. we did see her quite a bit her first year because she'd drive home with her laundry.. but the visits got less & less. My parents would still call her all the time seeing if she wanted to do something for them or with them. It was the phone calling habit my parents developed that made me decide to go to Davis.. at least I'd be far enough away I wouldn't be expected to come home AS much, but I could when I wanted. I also liked the feel of the Davis campus better than Cal's.
I've also heard that UCLA is rather superficial, and the one person I know that went there was nerdy in high school and turned himself into this metrosexual frat boy.. it's crazy.
In your case, since you love the Cal campus.. maybe you should just go there. If you do go there though.. I'd get an apartment or live in the dorms for sure though... do not live at home... that way you'll get the full experience.

Pearlinthemist has very good points. In my opinion, leaving your area is the best thing to do in order to grow as a person. If I were to choose SJSU or Santa Clara University, my life would not change as much. I'm into college for the sole purpose of expanding my horizons (in education and life) ^^.

thanks everyone, i think ive decided on berkeley just because i would probably be bitter if i went to davis, knowing i could have gone to a better school, and i dont think i would fit in as well at LA

Good job making a decision! The best of luck to you!
