Hey all, I for some crazy reason am going nuts as a sophomore. I live in New Jersey in the Trenton area and go to a public school. I dont know the ranking, but I take hard classes. I have been studing PSAT and SAT to an obsession. This is not a call for attention or praise, because I am really not getting anywhere with scores. My score is like a 1830 scaled score for the SAT I. I always get like 780 in Math but 550 range in Writing and CR. I wanna go to a Uni. California school for Engineering Major, but am freaking out. By the way, I am a Indian-Hispanic. Mom is Hispanic, and dad is from India.

I have all decent grades, except my ninth grades were not that great with a couple C's on the transcript. This is driving me off the wall because of ninth grade. I dunno how to get the SAT I scores up and am stressing out like crazy to get into a UC school. Berkely, Irvine, Davis. It would be my dream to go out to the West Coast instead of being in NJ. Please give me some advice or anything. Thanks alot guys/gals and I apprecaite it alot.

um wow you definately should not be stressing, wait until October of senior year, I am panicking over my Early App. stuff. Anyway, its hard to predict what you will look like in a couple years, I know people who were quite competitive as underclassmen but couldnt take the pressure as classes got harder and they got older. But if I could go back in time to your age, I would join many more clubs-- you will be kicking yourself in the ass if you don't do this. And although C's hurt, if you continue not getting them, most colleges will disregard freshman grades. Next year is VERY important, study hard try to get all A's. As you get older the SATs will look much easier and if you end up with say a 3.7 or 3.8 GPA, a 2100 SAT, and great extracurriculars, you can apply anywhere you want. Being a URM will be a big help.

UCB/UCLA: Super Reach (out of state, Engineering)
UCSD: Reach (out of state, Engineering)
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Slight Reach (out of state)
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match (out of state)

May I ask mushroom, what is a URM. How does it help? Thanks alot for the reply. I feel pretty confident in myself and think I will be able to stick it out through the rough classes next year.

also flopsy, those look pretty steep. That means I have little no chance whatsoever. I though having those courses would stand out and perhaps give me an edge. But judging by what you said, it makes me think twice!!

yea URM ^ see above. FYI, don't listen to that flopsy person, he keeps posting that same response for some reason... it's weird. Anyway since you are a soph. and it is just Oct. don't let anyone tell you you can't get in somewhere. If you are good enough, any college will overlook freshman grades. Keep your head on straight.
