To keep a long story short, I’m a trying to fill out for fasfa however I got an email stating that both me, and social security numbers don’t match in social security administration database. I called my school to see what was wrong and they told me everythibg was correct except me and my mother’s name that appear on our cards respectively even though I typed it into my fafsa EXACTLY how it appears on our cards. Unless I’m supposed to be in all upper case letters, I don’t know what to do. I’m tired of going up to the federal aid office and getting emails stating that I did something wrong any help would be much appericated. I’m a Us born citizen and so is my mom
Any spaces, in ur last name, honestly you can call them and see what the issue is, ive done that before.
Maybe there is a mystery in your past like this one:

Contact the Social Security administration to get a confirmation on the SSN and corresponding name.
Do you happen to have an apostrophe or hyphen in your name?
No, and neither does mom. Could our names just be case sensitive? Like, would it go through if it’s all upper case?
I tried the all-caps thing and it didn’t help. (I never did get mine fixed, but I gave up because luckily I didn’t need it)
edit to add link to my thread, maybe the advice in there will help you. It sounded like the school should be able to help you if you take them your SS card and ID.
How did you pay for college without finiacial aid
I want to make sure I understand your issue. Did you file a FAFSA yet? When you filed it, did the email come from Federal Student Aid/Department of Education, or did it come from your school? My advice depends on the answer to those questions …
I didn’t need the aid to afford the classes I was taking, but the school had told me to do FAFSA anyway. Someone at your school’s FA office should be able to help you fix this since you do need the system to work!
You won’t get an FSA ID if they can’t match your SSN with the information. I don’t think the name match is as sensitive as SSN and birth date when you put it in. I thought the name was the problem with my daughter, who has 2 first names and a middle name (ie, “Mary Sue” is her first name, “Jane” is her middle name), and I tried all kinds of combos, Mary Sue J., Marysue J, Mary S). It turns out it was her SSN entered wrong but hard to tell because it appears as *** ** **** on the application page. As soon as I found that error, the name didn’t seem to matter. Had a problem with mine because I’d reversed the last two numbers of my birth date. and that took me two tries to find (it looked right because they were the right numbers, just switched).
It won’t let you complete the forms until you get the FSA ID.
It may be that you are putting in all the numbers correctly, but SSA has your birth date wrong, a maiden name for your mother (if she’s had the same number for ages), the wrong status if either of you had a number before you became a citizen.
Good luck. If you need to change something, you have to go into the SSA office, they won’t do it by phone.
Yes, I filled out aid with the school. It just that it won’t through completly until I fix this social security thing. Everything appears to be correct except for the names. That’s what the guy told me on the phone. He told me to bring both social security cards with me.
Everything else appears to be good except for the names. I’m lost.
Sorry for the english, I’m typing on my phone.
I forgot to add, I am a US citizen. I was born here and so was my mom.
There are times that I find I have to try submitting things by using a different browser. If you are on your phone try a computer, if you are using chrome, try firefox.
Are you trying to fill out the FAFSA?
I agree, try a different browser. If the school thinks it can help by seeing the SS cards, do that if you can.
If you are trying to get a FSA ID, try it with a different email address (and your parent’s email address HAS to be different than yours). We also had trouble with one application, so switched to a different email address and started fresh. That seemed to work.
Starting a fresh FSAID shouldn’t work if you had the correct SS on the original FSAID. (FSA wouldn’t let me create a new FSAID because one already exists for my SS.)
But trying to create a new one is a good test of whether the original issue was the SS# I guess.
The Fafsa is already filled out. The email stated that it will remain incomplete until I resolve an issue with social security. It basically says, " the identifying information you reported on both mine and my mom’s fafsa doesn’t match social security administration (SSA) records" the dude on the phone told me all of the information on the Fafsa is correct except for the names. Even though it appears EXACTLY how it says on the cards.
Go to the nearest social security office with your mom to see what’s in their database. It may not match the cards. You’ll probably need to take your current cards, birth certificates, and photo ID (driver’s license) to get it straightened out.
