There are a few questions I need to ask a college administrator, the problem is, I don't know how to start it or how to not be informal.

For iming the person, do I start out with hello and then send it and wait for a reply? Or how do I start it?

For emailing do I write it like a letter and put dear soanso, and from, me.
I don't know how to begin. I feel awkward doing this.

Also, do you think talking to an administrator makes you more known and familiar with the office of administrations and that they may recognize your name when you submit your application, and it shows your interest. Or would they just forget me within the day so I'd be better off just posting my question up here?

Admissions officers are busy. Don't IM or e-mail them unless you're asking a question that's not answered on the webpage or you are sending them important info about you that they don't yet have. Doing otherwise may simply irritate them.

I agree with Northstarmom. Don't contact them for personable inquries. If you are writing an e-mail, don't make it long and formal. It should be as simple as this:

"University of Greatgoodingford Admissions,

[Ask question here]

Thank you,
[Your name]

Don't add any P.S.s or anything explaining the context of a situation unless your further inquire about it.

The question isn't on their website. I understand that their busy so I was thinking about emailing them later on in the season after the waitlists are decided and all that. I don't understand why it's such a bother since they have all their screen names up their next to their smiling faces. They even had a schedule on when they'll be on to email them. It seems like they want to help.

I'd recommend that you visit the University of Virginia thread and pose the question to "Dean J", an admissions officer who's voluntarily a CC regular.

Why don't you first post the question here and see if anyone has the answer. It may be that the answer is on the website, but you didn't notice it.

I suggest you also try calling the admissions office to see if someone there can answer your questions. Colleges generally love to hear in person from interested students[ instead of their parents].
