Hello.

My best friend just got a one day suspension for copying some work from his my other friend. He has already been accepted to I believe 4 schools and is still waiting to hear from other places. I believe the school will notify the colleges at the end of the school year. How likely is that my friend might get rescinded from the schools he got into or might get into from just this one day suspension?

Thanks for the input.

wow..that's pretty lame of the teacher who reported him to do so...

Sorry about your friend, I really don't know what the colleges will do, but I hope he gets out of this

It is not "lame of the teacher"; it's only fair to everyone else. Copying someone else's work is academic dishonesty, which colleges and universities consider a grievous offense. If his schools have an honor code, they will likely rescind his acceptance. Large state schools are more likely to be overwhelmed and may inadvertently overlook the issue. Certainly any merit aid he may have been offered would be reconsidered. Most applications require a signature indicating that an applicant will inform colleges/universities if they are caught cheating or suspended for any reason. Failure to do so is yet another act of dishonesty.

If he knows for sure that the school will report it at the end of the year, it's probably best for him to bring it up with the school and explain it. It'll go over much better than if he waits for the school to inform his college of choice, in which case he may end up with no where to go. This way, if a college DOES rescind their offer of admission, he at least has a few other places to look.

Why would they notify at the end of the school year? If they notify at all, have them notify the schools NOW. That way he can see how the schools will react when he still has some options open- he doesn't want to decline his admission offers at all but one school and then have that school rescind his admission.

He should probably do the whole 'write an essay about what cheating taught you' thing- at least show he learned from the mistake...
