Impact of Disciplinary Probation

I was placed on disciplinary probation for a span of less than 2 months this past summer due to underage drinking at age 20. My hearing officer was a jerk who didn’t clearly explain the impact of the offense to me. After talking with others I’ve come to learn that this is potentially something that shows up to graduate schools and even possibly employers in rare cases.

I’m frustrated as hell about the whole situation. It’s got me real soured on looking at grad schools, and to be honest I’ve thought about trying to transfer, but every time I remember that this is going to impact my candidacy in some way. Yes, it was my fault, and I had no real reason to dispute the sentence because I was caught drinking, regardless it’s impossible not to be frustrated about being 20 and getting in trouble for something legal in over 90% of the world. Ohio State Student Conduct is an awful department that doesn’t answer any question straightforward, and they have no respect for due process or students.

I’d love to hear from some others then, possibly some that have experienced this transferring in or out of Ohio State, how a disciplinary probation sentence on your permanent record truly affects you. Yes, I know “It depends.” Well, I’d love to know how it depends instead of worrying like a paranoid freak. What things could legitimately be affected, and what things I am an idiot for worrying about due to this? I’d appreciate any perspective people here have.

It’s hard to say what future schools, employers, etc., will look at and base their decisions on, but just keep forging ahead and keep out of trouble. I’m sure this isn’t a rare occurrence, so I wouldn’t worry about the impact too much - just don’t let it happen again.

I know with law school, you disclose everything in order to sit for the bar - every speeding ticket, etc. A guy in my class spent Christmas break in jail for a DUI. He still got to sit for the bar. He just stopped drinking and didn’t do anything else to jeopardize things further. I think most places/people are forgiving if you show you’re making improvements and that it was a one-time thing. Good luck!
