Impact of taking Latin for only a year?

I have the option to skip lunch to take an elective in 9th grade; in this case, Latin. If I continue skipping lunch for Latin in 10th grade, I won’t have the option of taking AP Stats, which I would rather take. Is it worth taking Latin in the first place? I am already taking French alongside it.

If you’re aiming for selective colleges, you’ll want 3-4 years of the same language, whether that’s Latin or something more common like Spanish or French.

Are you taking another language other than Latin? If not, most colleges want a minimum of 2 years Foreign Language and the top colleges would like to see 3 years but 4 years is preferred.

@goldenbear2020 @Gumbymom Sorry for not mentioning it; I’m taking French alongside it.

Taking just 1 year of Latin seems okay as long as you keep taking French. My D took AP Latin but only 1 year of Spanish as an elective. Didn’t seem to matter when she applied to colleges as she got in most places where she applied and received quite a few merit scholarships.

@amy989 Thanks for clarifying!

I’m taking Latin II now, and took Latin I last year. Regardless of whether you continue or not, you learn a bit about grammar. I’m actually learning the same grammar right now in English and Latin, which I find interesting. Plus, the culture and mythology is fun too. :slight_smile:

So, you’d have 4 years of French and 2 years of Latin? Yes, it’d be very valuable. First, because the two languages have many points in common. Second, because it’s rare, and therefore a positive differentiator for an adcom reviewing your transcript.

Statistics is better taken in college, because it’s one of those classes that goes on your resume under “relevant classes” (and your potential employer doesn’t care what classes you took in HS). In addition, College stats comes in two flavors, calc-based and non-calc based, so you can choose what works best for you and the major you want to pursue.

It seems like you could get three years of Latin if you took Latin I in ninth grade, Latin II in eleventh grade, and Latin III in twelfth grade. Is that possible?

If you get college credit for AP Statistics, why can’t you just list the class you got credit for?

@halcyonheather Unfortunately, our school only goes up to Latin II. I’d probably be rusty, and on top of that, there are so many more interesting 11th grade electives.

As far as college admissions, I don’t think it’s going to matter whether you take Latin or not.

^wrt to statistics: because AP stats is not the equivalent of a college stats class and HS classes don’t count (exceptions are calculus and foreign language, which are sequential and where level reached is indicative).
