Impacted Majors: Business Economics

I am thinking of changing major to Business Economics. Can anyone tell me if this is an impacted major?

Also, is there some chart or table that details which majors at UCI are impacted, and which ones are not?

Thanks.

it actually hasnt opened yet, i think it opens for the winter quarter. im gonna do it

Make sure you guys know business economics = accounting, not an actual business management major.

yea we do.. and i dont think it actually directly means accounting.. more of a integrated business with econ major.

Does it really open Winter quarter?

Here is my situation: I'm currently an English major wanting to switch to a Business Economics Major. However, I read for the procedures/requirements to submit a form to change to Business Econ Major, you had to have completed Mathematics 2A-B as well as Economics 20A-B with a certain GPA.

Having not taken the Math Placement test, I am unable to enroll in the Math 2A. Additionally, I was unable to enroll for Economics 20A either, as the class had already filled up before my enrollment window opened.

So will I have to wait until my Sophomore Year (after I take the required courses) before I can change major? Or can I request this change of major before then? And will it be difficult to change into this major?

i am not sure, but im a winter transfer and i dont think its opened by then, when i was at academic advising they gave us a special paper .. (i went to social sciences ) that was for business econ. had a list of the classes u needed etc.

What's an impacted major?

^ It's the kind of major that has certain criteria you have to follow (like a minimum GPA etc) and you have to apply and get accepted to that major.

Do you foresee Business Economics as being a difficult major to get into?

not suer... its gonna be new to uci, and most people that went to uci did not know about it, and most people taht go to uci dont go for business, cause well... uci never had undergrad business... uci is more well known for sciences

I have no clue because I'm only going to be a freshman this fall. But it SEEMS that it won't be as challenging to get into this major as with other majors because it's so new. There aren't set standards from previous years to make comparisons. Plus not as many people know about it which probably means not as many will apply.. so there's less competition?

But I shouldn't get my hopes up like that; I'm majoring in business econ!

The difference between business econ and standard econ is not much. For the four upper div econ classes, instead of taking any of the UD econ classes, you take four business focused classes. That's it. The prereqs should be the same, the stats should be the same, etc. The "truth" is Business Econ has been released to combat with the business major that should be arriving in Fall of 2007.

Business econ does NOT equal accounting. You need to take the accounting minor offered through the paul merage school of business to complete necessary coursework to prepare for a career in accounting. Getting a biz econ degree will not help you outright if you are pursuing accounting.

If you believe biz econ will not be competitive, think again. The Econ major is already an impacted major, with higher requirements than most other majors at UCI. Biz econ has been talked about already since its announcement in Spring of last year.
