My son has been accepted at U of O for the fall. He really likes the school. Does anyone know if U of O has budget impacted programs like we're seeing in our home state California schools?

I would love to know that as well. I’m from Nevada and I know our system of high education is being horribly impacted.

Budgets are a big issue here like in so many other states. I have not seen as dramatic and negative outcomes, though, at the public universities as CA has endured.

While I think every state is struggling to appropriately fund public education, the difference between Oregon and California is that for years the Oregon state government has only been the source of about 9% of the university’s budget. The rest comes from other sources like private donations and tuition, so they have been less reliant on the government than other states. The California university system, in contrast, has historically received something like 30% (maybe more) of their budget from the government. Because of the fiscal crisis in CA the funding has been dramatically decreased, which is why the university programs are so impacted. They are struggling to make up that funding from other sources, which is also why tuition keeps increasing.

University of Oregon’s new President has fought hard this past year to get a new funding system passed by the government that will create move budget stability and therefore help them avoid steep tuition increases year-to-year. In fact, one part of the proposal would guarantee tuition to remain the same all four years a student attends. If you’re interested to learn more about the proposal here’s the link.

To our current understanding, budget is not making deep cuts in what curriculum the UO will be offering next academic year. We are currently refining the 2011-12 academic catalog, but the most recent (and recently updated) list of undergraduate majors, minors and preparatory programs at the UO is located at [Explore Majors and Minors | Office of Admissions](http://admissions.uoregon.edu/explore/majors).
