Importance of AB Calc in High School

I'm applying for ED. I was told by the mother of someone who got accepted into W&M that they will probably reject you if you do not take AB Calculus as a high school senior. Is this true? I'm interested in liberal arts, but I was told that AB Calculus is a "deal-breaker" for all types of students.

Lie! I took AB calc and was admitted OOS, another girl from my school who will also attend W&M in the fall did not and just took regular calc. The college wants to see you follow your interests and challenge yourself, that doesn’t mean you need AB Calc :)

I didn’t take Calc at all in high school. I took it last year (my Sophomore year at W&M). I’m pretty sure specific classes are not deal breakers for acceptance. The point is that you challenged yourself in high school in some way or another. If you took 10 APs but Calc wasn’t one, that doesn’t mean you didn’t challenge yourself, just that you challenged yourself in a different way from somebody else.

The only real deal breakers for acceptance at W&M are those things listed as required when you apply. =P

We definitely recommend taking calculus because it’s one of the more challenging classes you can take as a high school student. It is certainly not required nor will its absence alone be the reason we don’t admit someone but if you think you can be successful in the class, we recommend taking it.
