When I apply to college next year, I will have only taken one AP Exam. Chemistry. Will extra importance be placed on this single exam when I apply? If I do badly, is it over for me?

Calculus…take it…

I am going to take it. What I mean is I will not have taken the AP exam for it yet when I am applying. Unless you’re suggesting self-studying…

I say the more exams you take, the better. If you scored high on the AP Chem exam, then it can only help you.

The advantage of the one exam is that is the only exam you need to study for so you should do fairly well! On the flip side you may consider self-study 1 or 2 other exams incase you do flop on the AP exams, my main caveat is before you start self-studying make sure you have enough time for AP Chemistry.

Is just one AP exam “rigorous” enough? I know it varies by your school, but only to an extent.

Some of the schools I’m applying to prefer that the applicant takes calculus and European History.

My philosophy is that the more AP classes that you can take, and handle well, the better. Ask around your school, see what classes are easy/end up with good results for most students who take the test coming out of that class. Also, think about self study, it can be hard however. If you’re good at math and science, definitely take Calc and Physics, they are great classes, as well as Chem which you already took.
