I'm mainly a soprano through mezzo soprano, though I can sing alto as well. I was wondering how important belting is for college auditions, and how much it is considered in deciding who to accept. I don't have a very clear understanding of belting in general, and neither does my choir teacher, so I am hoping to start professional vocal lessons soon with an expert who can help with that, but until then, what exactly is belting, and how important is it for college auditions?

Here is a thread that might answer some of your questions:

Play to your strengths. If that isnt belting, dont hurt yourself. Schools look for potential, not a finished product.

Okay, thank you!!

Don’t belt if you don’t know how, but definitely seek out a teacher who teaches a solid belt technique. Classical technique does not prepare you to belt, so find someone who understands that and teaches you what you need to know.

No.

Legit singers are necessary. Sing clear, colored and beautifully. Act the song. You will be sought after. If you don’t belt, don’t attempt to for the auditions.

I’m an alto/mezzo, and although I can hit up to a D6, I normally don’t sing anywhere near that range. That’s because I feel more comfortable singing low notes and belting. You might be the opposite. So like JakeRoku said, play to those strengths - show off your voice in a more classical style, if that’s the range you shine in. Don’t worry about belting, at least until you get into a program. Then, you MIGHT be required to learn to belt the healthy way, but most programs need legit singers. I can’t tell you how frustrated I used to get at myself for not being able to belt like Idina Menzel - but after much training and patience, I was able to achieve a healthy belt using my mixed voice. But all too often, young singers strain themselves trying to belt!! Break a leg!
