Hello everyone,
I want to join clubs for fun, but I know the chance for me to become an officer in clubs are slim(which is not helping for a junior who is going to apply for college). So I am just wondering what role does club activities play in the admission process? Is officer position the only important part for college admission?
What’s important is that you do things that matter to you. So if you are active in 6 clubs because that’s how you like to spend time with your friends, fine. If you like to play a sport, fine. If you spend tons of time playing in a jazz band, fine. It’s fine to do things to figure out what you like. The only thing that you shouldn’t do is something that doesn’t genuinely appeal to you because you think it’ll look good on an application. In general, you can’t really make those things look like more than a check the box activity.
You don’t have to be the president of a club to contribute. Offer to lead a committee that actually accomplishes something. Or not! There are plenty of colleges for students who would rather just enjoy playing in the band. You don’t need to be a leader in every activity either. My son was on the literary magazine because he had a bunch of friends there, but he never wanted to be one of the editors. He gave most of his time to another activity and that is what he ended up writing about in his essays.
