Importance of essays in top public schools?

I know essays are really important in ivies and other top private colleges because most of the applicants already have great stats, but how important are they really in the top public schools?

I'm applying to schools like U of M, UIUC and Georgia tech (I know they're not up there with the UC's but they're up there). If you have good stats and a great background in math and science and great recommendations (if they're required, I'm applying to the college of engineering btw), would you be okay with an average essay? By average essay I mean one that answers the prompt and uses correct grammar and everything, but isn't anything special at all.

Thanks for your time!!

Bump, anyone have any insight on this o_O Thanks!

Part of it depends on what you’re majoring. Being an engineering major, they probably know that you won’t be an amazing essay writer. (not saying you aren’t but sometimes that happens) If you’re majoring in Philosophy, then average essays may cost you your chances. Essays are pretty important everywhere, but its only part of the package. If you’re pretty strong everywhere else, you’ll be fine.
