Importance of Extra-curricular Activities for Grad School

I am currently in Grade 12 and I would like to find out the importance of extra-curricular activites in university. I want to apply to grad school after completing an engineering undergrad in Canada and I don't know if extra-curriculars are an important factor that world-renowned universities such as MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Stanford, etc. This may help me decide if I should go into Engineering Science at the University of Toronto or Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. I have heard that Engineering Science will take up a lot more time than Mechatronics. Thus, if I choose Toronto, I may not have enough time for extra-curriculars. However, would co-op/internship experience be more important?

Extra-curriculars don’t matter. Internships are very important.
