i am a junior, top decile, 3.97 GPA, in all AP’s - I am taking the most rigorous courses at my school and am doing well, but as far as extracurriculars go i am a little nervous. it is not like i come home after school and watch TV for 5 hours, but looking at other peoples’ “chancing” posts i feel a little behind.
i participate in:
field hockey
lacrosse
secretary of environmental club
french club
peer advocate program
peer tutoring
founding member of group which goes to middle school and does a presentation about anti bullying
church youth group
math team

are those sufficient? should i work to be more involved, find more leadership positions? are extracurriculars really important in a brown app?

Brown likes passion and dedication. Is there anything you really LOVE, and have pursued to a degree that portrays that? Can you write about it eloquently and show them that?

actually i am very passionate about foreign affairs and government… unfortunately my school does not offer a model UN or anything of the sort and i am pondering asking a teacher/faculty member to advise if i start one… if only i could find the time! would starting it junior year be too late?

The issue is not how many activities you do, but what you do with those activities.

You’re secretary of the environmental club – what does the club accomplish, and how do you help it succeed? You’re in the student leadership club – what does it do, what impact has it had on the school, and what role have you played in that process? Has bullying gone down in middle school thanks to your efforts?

If you focus your energies on the existing clubs you belong to and make an impact – that is just as, if not more, impressive than starting a new club. If anything, you are involved in too much – narrow it down to a couple of activities and start making a difference.
