I have taken French 1 and French 2, and next year I'm thinking about quitting French, because my sechdule doesn't have enough room for all the other classes I want to take [more math and science related] anatomy, ap stats, ap chem, genetics and biotech, etc. My question is, how would this look to colleges? I would be taking classes relating to fields I enjoy, but would colleges rather have 3-4 years of a foregin language or see me taking classes I have a passion in?

It depends on the requirements for individual schools. If they require more than 2 than you would be advised to take more French, if not its your choice.

If you are thinking of more ivy-like schools, I think most of them require 3 years of the same language.

Our school dosen't even require foregin lang. Or are you talking about colleges? How would you find out requirements from specific colleges?

Another Q-How about art, our counselers were suggesting 2 years of art [to look 'well rounded'] but I hate art, and I'm terrible at it. Is it necessary?

Courtney-Yeah, I would look at Columbia, Cornell, Brown, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, UofM etc..

Yes take at least 3 years of foreign language.

You don't need 2 years of art; 1 year is fine, usually.

Also, it's 3 years of the same foreign language; it's not impressive to do first year Spanish or something for your third year.

buuuummp

Really, what else do you need to know? Have my 500 meaningless posts not justified my opinions thoroughly? :(

...:p

Okay here is my problem.

My school is offering a new languauge (Chinese) next year but it is only open to juniors and seniors. I will be a junior next year but taking this new language would only allow me 2 years of the same language. But i really am interested in the langauge/culture. SHould i take on the language and graduate with 2 years of foreign langauge? Would that be a huge disadvantage when applying to college?

Does the Spanish you took in 8th grade count? Because when I was a freshman, I started with the 2nd year of Spanish because of my 8th grade Spanish was year 1. If it counts, by the end of this year, I will have 3 years of Spanish, and 2 in middle school.

schools such as Ivy Leagues and up there levels like Duke, Stanford, etc. pretty much require (without maybe blatantly saying) 4 yrs of foreign lang. in high school. I mean.. think about all the other people applying to these top notch schools... most of them will have 4 yrs of foreign language.
