Hi, I interviewed for Duke last month and wanted to know how significant the interview was?
My stats are average and even below average compared to the other applicants applying to duke, although my class rank (6/316) and GPA are fairly strong. My alumni interview was excellent and my interviewer and I connected very well, at the end he told me that he would give his best recommendation for me. How much importance lies with the alumni interview and could it affect my chance of admission?

I have also wondered this after my UChicago interviewer told me that he would write a glowing rec that he seldom gives for applicants. Hope it weighs heavily though I doubt it.

sorry...but not much....my duke interview told me before hand....this is not important at all...it is just a way of getting to know the school...and for the school to know u....nothing major...sorry.....

For the majority of applicants, the interview will not dramatically increase or decrease the applicant's acceptance chances. However, the interview is evaluative, and can definitely tip the scale if somebody's on the bubble. Likewise, if the interviewer gives an exceptionally positive evaluation (as in saying top 3% of all applicants) or extremely negative, it can change the admissions decision. So, to reiterate, for the majority it won't make a significant difference, but it is part of the application process and the admissions committee does take it into consideration, so do your best. Saying that it never makes a difference is simply not true. But, on the other hand, don't freak out if it didn't go perfectly.

thanks for your helps guys, i hope the interview does make a difference

my interviewer told me it was like a tie breaker. if admissions is trying to decide between two applicants with similar stats and one had a good interview and the other didn't, the good interviewer will be admitted
