Important Advice for International Students

thanks.

by the way, for those 7 need-blind schools also for Int'ls, is there a policy that a student from family income less than $60,000 does not have to pay tuition?

scaredy cat, Columbia isn't need blind, is it? For internationals?

No, it isn't. Columbia will meet 100% of your need if you're admitted, but its admission of international students is way more selective if you apply for aid.

Kerouac Cat is right, Chlormel. And Scarecrowluv, I'm sorry but there is no such policy, otherwise we'd all just apply to those schools, wouldn't we?

Wow, dunnin. For real? I'm not sure, is SAT still necessary when youre transferring from one US college to another? i've taken English 101 at my old campus...

I am doing EAs to 4-6 unis. Will my chances of earning financial aid there increase in any SIGNIFICANT way (I am an int'l student with 80% need)?

I think so, unless you're applying to need-blind colleges like Harvard and Middlebury.

Why not at need-blind schools..?! Harvard certainly not bcoz it doesn't have EA or ED. However, Middlebury has ED and chances should increase there if they do thru EA at lower schools.

thx!...............

However, applying ED to schools just 'to increase your chances of getting in' is risky business.
As someone pointed out before, even need-blind schools that promise to meet 1oo % of your financial need might end up being too expensive, simply because these schools consider that you can pay more than what you and your family think you can pay.
I wouldn't advise any international students that need a lot of aid to apply ED; do your job right, study hard for those standardized tests, work hard in school, and you will get those opportunities.

They're out there, it's certainly not impossible.

Keep an eye out for liberal arts colleges like Williams, Amherst, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton, Vassar, Grinnell, Middlebury, etc. You can get pretty sweet deals here.
And also some of the Ivies, like the ones mentioned before.

Competition is tough and this is not going to be easy. But if you work hard you can definitely fulfill your dreams (in this case, at least..).

^ I got in ED with 100% FA at Gettysburg college. Yeah - whole 47k of it. So I'll contradict your statement and advice all international students to apply ED to colleges that offer FA in ED to international students (only a handful like Dickinson, Gettysburg and Bates actually do). The worst that can happen? Transfer to the RD pool. So try it. And good luck.

I'm wondering if there are any governmental sites that offer similar advice for graduate students.

thanks a lot , really i need a wep like that

Hey does anyone have a list of colleges that either waives your application fee or doesnot require it?

I’m new here and have absolutely no idea where I should post this, so I thought I’d just take my chances posting it here in case anyone can help!

I was just wondering if anyone could provide me with a link or information about teaching degrees in America? Something like the American equivelant of a PCGE, if there even is one! I have no idea where to start looking to find out about what such courses would entail! Or maybe just direct me to the appropriate forum to post this question?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help :)

Dear Student,
A team of college students (Princeton, Harvard, U Penn, Columbia, Northwestern, Stanford) from Asia is seeking college application essay submissions from students from Asia* who are studying in US or UK universities, or recent high school graduates who will study in US or UK universities. Many high school students in Asia who are applying to colleges in the US or UK face a relative lack of resources in crafting their college applications and especially essays. As students who have been through the exact same process recently, you can help the generation of students after you and make a positive and meaningful impact in their lives. We are looking for personal statements and creative essays in particular, and you are welcome to submit more than one essay.
If selected, your essay will be in a book named “50 Outstanding College Application Essays from Asia,” the first compilation of college application essays specifically serving high school students in Asia. Submitters can choose to be anonymous. If you submit your essay(s), regardless of whether you are selected, as a token of our appreciation, you will be provided with free admissions to all Ivy Gate –a student-run college counseling company sponsoring this contest– networking events around Asia, in which you can meet and mingle with hundreds of students and alumni from top US and UK universities. If your essay is selected to be in the book, you will also receive a prize of 300 HKD and a copy of the book once it is published. If you are selected as the 1st prize winner, 2nd prize winner or 3rd prize winner, you will receive 3000 HKD, 2000 HKD or 1000 HKD respectively.***
Essays will be judged for creativity, coherence, clarity of expression, originality, and sophistication of ideas and writing. The judges include staff members or former staff members of major college newspapers (The Harvard Crimson, The Daily Pennsylvanian, Columbia Spectator).****
To submit your college application essays, please email info@ivy-gate.com with your essays as document attachments by August 13. Please also kindly provide us with the name of the college you attend. We will notify you of the results as soon as possible.
