Current college students, what are your suggestions for what to bring to a first year of college? Especially some non-obvious items...like yesterday I thought of power strip. Let's make a list here!

Condoms. Lots of condoms.

Something to sweep up dust. I had never lived with a hard floor before; my whole house had carpet (except the kitchen and basement of course). The dust is unbelievable.

im not sure if this is obvious or not, but definetly a mini coat rack for people too lazy to hang up all their clothes

I found what I mostly needed was cooking equipment - things like scales, spatulas, bread knife, grater - which I hadn’t thought of.

But if you’re on a meal plan I guess that doesn’t apply.

waffle iron
quesadilla maker
george foremen grill
hangers

^ Unless you live in a dorm where heat-producing appliances are prohibited.

My favorite must-have: a vibrator.

duct tape
carpet(s)

Condoms are overrated. Just pull out.

lol thanks everyone. the school i’m going to says heat-producing appliances are allowed “unless they have an open coil.” So I think I can have a microwave & george foreman, but not toaster. I’m not sure what else would qualify as “open coil” other than toaster…

^I think it’s just toaster and toaster oven that would be open coil.

I use a 6 cup rice cooker a lot. For rice, but mostly pasta, hot dogs, and soup. That was my must-have when I moved in.

If you have enough space, my other must-have is some kind of lounge seating. Be it one of those disc chairs, a futon, anything that will fit that isn’t a desk chair-- I found a super tiny futon at ikea for like $100 that is less than five feet wide. This is a must-have because I hate letting company sit in my bed, try to avoid working in my bed since supposedly psychologically it’s better to only sleep there, and because it’s going to suck not sitting anywhere but in a desk chair for the next four years. <3 my futon.

Gotta agree with something to clear the dust out. Also a microwave. If your dorms big enough get yourself some type of cheap, but comfortable chair.

If your going to have a private bathroom definitely get cleaning supplies.
-Air freshner, Bug spray
-Surge Protector
-Laptop Lock
-Medium sized storage bins
-Flashlight
-Earplugs (for those noisy nights)

What is a surge protector and laptop lock?

Toasters, space heaters, fondue pots, some hot plates. In a wider sense, “open coil” is sometimes used to refer to anything with an exposed heating element (like george foreman grills) even if they are technically closed coil appliances.

Googling for pictures might be easier than us trying to describe them.

I always recommend the minimalist route. If you can’t think of it, you probably don’t need it and can purchase later.

This thread basically covers everything that you would need/want to bring.

What a helpful thread. Thank god I was reminded to bring my three-hole punch adapter and swim goggles. I might’ve died otherwise.

^That list is pretty awesome.

I second the rice cooker. I love that thing more than life itself.

Febreeeeeze
