Important question regarding unit cap. Please help!

I attended a csu for my freshman year and am moving back home to attend a cc in hopes of transferring to a uc. I ended up failing a five unit course at the csu and the only way the grade will be replaced is if I make it up there which I can't do because of finances. So it would make sense to take several classes to try to bump my gpa as high as possible which is what I'm planning to do. However, even if I take 90 units which seems to be that cap at most school except Cal, LA, Irvine and a few others my gpa will still be around a 3.3. My question is will my five unit class still "count" as five units even though I failed it? I'm not sure if that makes sense...it that number of units included my total number of units or will I still be able to take five more units in place. I know the grade won't be replaced but will it still technically count as 5 units since I didn't pass the class?

i think they do

you’re fine. units at a CC do not count towards the 80 unit cap… FYI it’s 80, not 90

Well for some it’s 90 and for others it’s 80. I’m debating whether I should take more than 90 units and not be able to apply to UCSC, UCSD, UCSB but be able to apply to UCLA, Irvine and Cal with around a 3.5. OR I can just take 90 units and apply to all schools with like a 3.3.

[University of California - Counselors](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/adminfo/transfer/advising/answers/applying.html#5)

There is no equivalent to the class at your CC? If there is (check Assist.org) then UC’s will replace the grade when determining your GPA.

With a 3.3 you would be able to TAG into SB, SC, SD and Irvine. Depending on your major a 3.5 may not cut it at LA and Cal.
