impressions of a freshman... so far!

mu son is considering applying to fsu next fall. can any freshman, please give me their impression (good or bad) about their experience over the first 4 months of being at florida state.

i am interested in everything you have to say,... social life, dorms, food, classes, professors..

thanks

I arrived at florida state this fall, and i love it, its paradise. Im doing a double major in english and psychology. My first semester i took 13 hours. Im a member of the honors program.
Dorms/Food
I live in Landis, the newest dorm. Its brand new so its realy great, the rooms are big and theyr'e suitestyle so you only have to share a bathroom with 3 other people. I think the rooms in Cawthon might be a little bigger, but you have to be in a living learning community for that. If you live in one of the nice dorms thats been rennovated you have to have a meal plan, which works for some people i guess. Suwannee room is ok the first week, and then you realize how horrible it is. Fresh food is pretty good, but its all the way on the other side of campus. Theres other places like miso and einstein's bagels to eat though, so it hasnt been to bad.
Social Life
Some people ay Tally is boring, but ive found plenty to do. Ive met a lot of new people and have some really close new friends. Im pre-law, so i joined Phi alpha delta, a co-ed buisness fraternity on campus. Its been great, it gives you so many things to do and so many oppurtunities, and they have ones for pre-med and other careers too. If theres one for you, i recommend it. Theres always something to do, from house parties to going out to the strip, which are the clubs on tennasee street. Downtown tallahassee is within walking distance, and theres pretty good public transportation.
Classes
I took 13 hours my first semester, including the one hour required honors class. I took an honors seminar which only had 4 other students in it with a graduate level professor, it was a lot of work, but great. I took a women in literature class which had about 30 people in it, A general psych class which had about 300 people, and an intro to philosophy class that had about 150 people in it. Honestly, i didnt feel like the large classes were a big deal, I just sat in the front to make sure i wouldnt get lost in the crowd. If you need help the professors or TA's are always willing to help, they've been really nice and you can always just send them an email.

Any more questions? Just send me a message or you can email me at cdb06d@fsu.edu

hey. thanks so much for the review. we live in new york and visited three schools in florida last summer (miami, university of florida and UCF). my son seems to think he wants a big school experience and warmer weather than the northeast has to offer, he also thinks he wants to major in business.

we plan to vist florida state in february or march. sounds like you really like it and i am sure he will want to apply.

thanks again

yeah i actually lived on long island when i was younger. The school of business is the largest in the university i believe, and I think they just got a new dean.

FSU has an excellent business program see: http://www.cob.fsu.edu/ and some rankings from the university website: http://www.fsu.edu/highlights/rankings.html

Per the current USNews undergraduate business school rankings (public and private universities):

UFL 32
FSU 43 (25th in US publics)
UMiami 70
UCF 143
USF 146

I can't believe a year has passed since i first posted this thread.

well, lets see if we can get an update.

any freshman students out there willing to share with us how your first semester at FSU has gone?

What classes did you take?
How many students?
How were the professors?

anything else you want to offer would be terrific.

I guess i'll answer also, actually my second semester here, i feel like an oldie lol.

Compared to summer its a whole different story, i liked the feel of summer, there were only about 5000 people on campus but now at any time on campus there are about 20k so you kinda always feel either crowded or like if your walking lincoln rd in miami or times square in ny. And the gym is always full.

classes i took, computer lit, cultural imperialism, human geography, intro economics, public policy= very easy schedule, completed most of my requirements and depending on how finals week goes i might have straight A's. Which is alot better than summer where i got a C in astronomy. In terms of the number of students both cultural imperialism and human geography and public policy had about 20-30 students, comp lit was online, and economics 68.. The professors were all ok, most would help you either before or after class or tell you to make an appointment or talk to the TA.

Really think twice before purchasing meal plan....i can no longer eat at suwannee (i get sick right afterwards everytime) fresh food is ok and so is the union. Alot of people seem to really dislike eating on campus but there stuck with unlimited meal palns, so i would really reccommend not purchasing an unlimited meal plan..i basically just bought 1000 garnet bucks which lets me eat anywhere on campus.

fsu-uf

what did you take last summer? I think your suggestion about "garnet bucks" is a good one. that way you can go to suwannee if you want to, but you don't have to feel like you have to go there.

summer i took astronomy and race and ethnicity.

Astronomy was really hard, seemed almost like upper level physics ended up with a C, in terms of race and ethnicity its a great class which fulfilled alot of requirements. I'd recommend taking comp lit and a social science class during summer. Since both are easy and fulfill requirements.

was the race and ethnicity teacher good? what was his/her name

"spivey"-really good teacher gave extra credit for showing up although not required to, powerpoint lectures were put up on blackboard and study guide was provided before test, quizzes could be re-tried infinetely to achieve high score.
Had to write a 3000 word paper, based on the native american- civil rights- and united workers movement where you dicussed the aims, methods, and leaders of the movements..i'd recommend taking the class, it was interesting atleast to me.

First semester is almost down(only finals left next week) and I neither hate or love FSU. A lot of it I blame it on my self for not being as social as I would like to(going to start joining some groups next semester to get to meet more people).

As to suggestions, try to stay away from Suwanee for it gets really tiring really quickly. I find myself eating at Pollo Tropical at the Union often even though I literally live a few feet away from Suwanee.

Try not to go suite style or at least stay away from Reynolds hall. This place to me is dead socially. I got to other dorms(usually community style dorms) and see a lot of people in the hall just talking and having fun. Here, the halls are always dead.

As to the area of Tallahassee, it is horrible and depressing. Once you step out of FSU, everything seems run down.

Hopefully things will change for me enxt semester to the point where I start liking this place instead of just being ok with it. If things don't get better, I see myself trying to transfer somewhere else(hopefully something next to a major city).

Jebus Christ - What hall would you recommend?

The hall dorms encourage socialization because you share common bathrooms down the hall. They are also less expensive, free if you have the Florida Prepaid dorm contract. If you are not picky about having a nice newer renovated dorm, there are some pluses to living in an old fashioned hall dorm.

Some students don't realize they need to make some effort to make new friends and some become homesick. When the pressures of exams start piling up, it can become overwhelming. See how you feel, after going home for break, you may find you are anxious to get back. Next semester, you will know your way around already and you can go out of your way to take advantage of the clubs and activities available to meet people.

rule 1-get involved
rule 2- dont stay in your room
rule 3- leave the shell, socialize

really important things to remember in terms of meeting people.

FSU-UF

those are great suggestions!

I won't be homesick at all :) I'm really looking forward to going off to college.

honestly everyone saids that, i know i did, i said i could last a year without seeing miami or my parents again, after 2 months I actually missed alot of things...like little things such as the radio stations or the weather..

Honestly, I'm not homesick. While tally isn't an amazing place, I would rather be here then back home in st.cloud. That place is horribly boring.

any other comments?
