FSU Review-From Summer Freshman.

Ok with only one week left till the conclusion of summer term I wanted to give incoming students, prospective students- parents a view into the life of an FSU incoming summer term freshman.

Dorms.
For summer I lived in gilchrist hall, after degraff, wildwood, and landis I would say gilchrist is the best. This place was usually very well taken care of by the staff and cleaning service. Every monday or wednesday the halls were cleaned and we were given toilet paper....we currently have a stack of toliet paper in our bathroom... The rooms are really spacious and the view is great. The only complaints would be the dorm isn't very social due to its layout and doors, there almost impossible to leave open. The dryers don't work very well in the laudry room and the vending machine rarely work but anyways I loved everythign else about it.

The campus
Its beautiful, compact, very pedestrian oriented. The campus is regularly cleaned, and new landscaping is always being put in. The buildings are for the most part new or renovated so the campus looks great. Favorite place on campus is probalby landis green, considered the center of the campus, its a great hangout because theres always something happen. Frisbee, football, voleyball. Also its amazing at night when you see many people in the fountain. I jumped in the fountain many times, including after dayglo parties.

Food
This is probably my biggest complaint. By the end of the summer suwanee tasted horribly. Fresh food was never open. So I did like alot of people i know, ordered out or ate somewhere else. One word of advice don't eat at Suwannee on the weekends it seems like the roll out the leftovers....one weekend they gave me with pasta with a peanut butter sauce, chex mix, bread, and nachos...I was like you call this a meal...and trust me pasta and peanut butter taste horrible. Fresh food is good but was never open, it gained the name fresh closed company.

People
Really nice and outgoing, A good portion of the students tended to be from South florida so I fit right in. It might be a little of a culture shock for people from smaller cities. Only thing i didn't like was that alot of people go home for the weekend, although its expected at a state school.

Parties=
Amazing, there is always or something fun to do, just don't do what some of my friends did, party every day of the week,, get excessively drunk and then get caught by the cops you'll be in big trouble. But I did hate the fact that most of them were over by 2am, its kinda early for a party to end

Professors and classes.
The classes are not bad, one word of advice don't take astronomy its really hard. The hardest assignment i had was a 3000 paper and it was quite a breeze. As long as you study the test are mangeable. And the professors are nice.

other
The leech center was really good, just the music blows. The rez was really fun just hot but thats expected. The student life cinema is great the just need to sell more concessions. The student union and sga did a grat job to host events. The school did a good job at doing its job and serving its students. One word of advice they should have more surviellance or security at night, there were lot of fights.

ok In conclusion i have not regretted for one minute the choice i made, fsu has been incredible and i can't wait for fall. I have not talked to one person who doesn't like fsu. For those incoming freshman this fall get ready for an amazing year.

disclaimer, my post was probably grammatically lacking and had many spelling errors, mainly because i'm being lazy. And is in no way indicative of my education while at fsu lol.

Lol - I've been trying to get my daughters to write...shows how much luck I've had.

Good luck at FSU!

Go 'Noles! (Football season is coming!!)

3000 paper

words or pages?

I am sure FSU-UF means 3,000 words.

Sounds like FSU was a good fit for you and you have learned to balance work and play so you can continue to enjoy this wonderful opportunity.

Whoops i'm sorry, it was a 3000 word paper,
class -race ethnicity and nationality=gordon rule requirement, x multicultural, history class, course number amh2097.

topic. a comparison of the native american, civil rights and farm workers movement.

And thanks for the responses.

Anyone seen or heard from bbecker? I was hoping we'd get a report of her experiences at Florida State.

The summer term is very different than the fall and spring terms. Everything is much quieter, classes are easier, and many students go home every weekend. If you like FSU now, just wait until the fall semester starts, you're really going to love it. There's nothing like football season in Tallahassee.

Fsu-uf

Glad to hear that the summer was great. Is great that you did throw in some academics reviews right after the party assessment HaHa

fsu-uf

thanks for the update. have you had a chance to see what the new dorms are like?

from what i saw, the new dorms-wildwood and degraff, Resemble landis, in layout and design. They feature bigger study rooms, more common areas, larger laundry rooms, more wood and tile and the room layout is similiar with the same floorplan as the newly renovated east side.

fsu-uf

can you store your stuff in your fall dorm in between the summer session ending and the fall session beginning ( i think there is about two weeks or so)?

my son is applying for summer 2008 If he is admitted, we are from out of state so I was wondering if students can store anything in their fall dorm.

thanks

yes you can store your stuff in the dorms, i'm personally not going to do that for one reason I'm living in degraff and we're not allowed to because its still not ready for occupancy so i'm leaving my stuff in a friends apartment.

thanks. let us know how the new dorm is after you move in.

FSU MBA
just how quiet is the summer? i am applying for summer session -- to increase my chances for acceptance. i am from nyc, so i wont be going home on the weekends. and the decisions to apply summer was a difficult for me since I will miss hangin out with my hs pals.

The summer is less crowded than the fall and spring semesters. It's not "ghost town" quiet, but there is a noticeable difference. I personally enjoyed the summer terms, less traffic and easier classes. As a freshman, it would be smart to start during the summer. That way, you'll have more time to get acclimated. The fall semester could be a little overwhelming at first, with all the stuff going on around campus and the city.
Other posters like Fsu-uf could probably give you some more insight on this topic.
I graduated a few years ago, things could've changed since then.

My son visited Tally a number of times this summer and he had a blast. He says he definitely plans to stay next summer.

From the summer activities listed on the website the school seems to have many things to do. I am not great at sports but I still like the idea of being able to go to the Leach center and the RES. I guess i was worried by a few comments that said kids go home...since I am oos and would be so far from home that all the other kids on the floor would go home. But honestly it sems so social I dont know why anyone wold choose to do that! What year is your son?

Fsu - UF hi? i wanted to know if you are saying that this is a good class to take for an incoming summer freshman ? ( i hope to be one next summer) also is this one class or a few? --------the race ethnicity and nationality=gordon rule requirement, x multicultural, history class, course number amh2097.-----

My son is a second semester sophomore. He took ASH1044 as his X history writing class with Travis Ritt which was not easy but he really enjoyed the course. You are smart to try to "get the most bang" for your credit by trying to pick a course that meets multiple general education requirements in one shot.

If you make careful selections you can avoid wasting your time/money with courses that don't satisfy multiple requirements. Also, try to pick courses that are prerequisites for a few majors so you have flexibility to change direction.

I really believe choosing your courses is an "art". To satisfy the gen. ed. requirements and major prerequisites while trying to avoid Friday classes and morning or late classes all while getting a highly rated professor in www.ratemyprofessors.com takes quite a bit of planning and perseverance.
