Improved Junior Looking for Colleges!

I'm stuck on college choices!
I don't know which colleges I should apply to since my record is a little off instead of being consistent.

My freshman year was rough so my GPA is a 3.31 when I'd have a 3.7-3.8 if I hadn't slacked off for that 1 year. I've taken a ton of honors classes and am taking 3 APs next year.

I've been playing softball since my freshman year and won the "Hard Worker" award freshman year and the "Most Improved Player" award sophomore year. I've been in film club since freshman year as well and was VP last year and am president this year. I'm also in Amnesty International and French Honor Society. I've also been nominated to win the Princeton Alumni Association of Maryland Princeton Book Award.

My SAT scores are CR=630 M=470 W=600. I'm retaking them in May.

As far as college goes I want a college that's 27K max. I'll look at higher priced schools if it ends up costing around 20K to 23K when I look at Net Price. I'm looking at a student body of above 5,000. I want to be able to do things on and off campus and maybe have a club or inter-mural softball team. It would be nice if my campus was nice to look at as well and I'd most likely be staying on campus so it'd be good to have decent dorm rooms.

I live in MD and halfway through college I might move to NC so I'd like to stay on the east coast below Mass. as far as travel costs go but I'll go farther if the school's cheaper. I'm also black and my great-grandmother is Venezuelan which I think allows me to say I'm hispanic/latino (?)

How much do colleges look at improvement?

Thanks for your help in advance and for reading this long thing!

I forgot to add that I had an 8 on my SAT Essay and I’m undecided for my major at the moment.

Not getting to much traffic on this… bump!

What do you want to major in and what’s a rough estimate of your gpa now?

@ETSTU5993 My counselor said I should have about a 3.4 by the end of this year and a 3.5-3.6 by the time I graduate IF I keep a 3.8 average for that year. I’ve been considering majors like Psychology, Political Science and going out on a limb and saying Biology considering that it’s a BIG might that I’ll go into pediatrics.

That’s another thing. What are some majors I can actually do something with that deal with humanities or social sciences? There are SO MANY majors out there but for a lot of them I feel like I could only be a teacher. Which is something but I don’t want it to be my only thing.

Thanks for replying!

Is that 27k a year or total?

So far I think your best match would be Virginia tech. It has what your looking for and is relatively close.

Take a look at West Virginia University.

That’d be 27K a year. It’d be amazing if I could find a good school that will cost that for all 4 years.

Thanks for the ideas! Virginia Tech and WVU are schools that I am defiantly looking at!

By the way, does anyone on here have a child or is a person that went pretty far away for college? I’d love to go to California but, I don’t know how much it’d cost to hop on a plane about 16 times a year and to move all my stuff. I’ve heard it’s pretty difficult to get into UCs too :/.

Being black gets a bigger boost than being Latino.

Why would you go home 8 times per year? My kids live in CA and go to east coast schools. They come home, at most, three times per year. Between internships, visiting friends and spring break trips, it’s usually not even that much! Air fare, if planned in advance is usuaLly under $500 round trip.

CA schools you can look at that will un about $27K/yr are the CSUs such as Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, SDSU, SJSU. UCs cost $55K and don’t have aid for OOS students. If you qualify for need based aid look at Occidental, Santa Clara, Pepperdine.

I was just counting breaks and didn’t really include internships and all that. I might have miscounted too… I was never really good at math. Hehe.

Thank for your suggestions! They’re defiantly school I’ll check out!

An added note. I am eligible for need based aid if that sways anyone’s opinion of a school.

Bumping this again… Any thoughts on any other colleges I should look at? I want this to help other people who are in my situation!

Looking at my stats, what do you guys think about FSU or the University of Miami?

The University of Delaware came to talk to some students at my school today and I really like it so far. Has anyone had an experience with UDel? How did they like it?

It is difficult to give you anything beyond a list of state schools if you are undecided or have no general idea as to what academic aspects you are looking for in a college. Look at NC state though. You have a chance of getting in, it is under 27k and it is a decent school. Others? Rutgers, UConn, UMass, Rowan U (affordable), Drexel, Penn State, UDel, USouth Carolina, FSU, WVU (affordable) etc.

You will need to get your SAT to 1900+ to really have a good shot at UMiami. Also, your GPA is a bit low for miami, but the trend is a definite plus.

First off I’m so glad to see your SAT scores because they’re almost identical to mine (my math scores killed me!) Anyways, I may not have any recommendations of colleges for you but I will say that colleges love improvement. I’ve been told that throughout high school by everyone, teachers, parents, guidance, admissions, etc. I’ve had a pretty good track record my whole HS career but I know that colleges love seeing that you’ve progressed through the years :)

@Caruso707 Thanks for your reply! I know it’s extremely limiting not knowing what I’m majoring in and makes it TONS harder. Going to a Tech school might not be wise if I’m majoring in English.
This is a really broad list of some considerations I went through, though. One of the constants is Psych and there’s still the possibility of being pre-med if I do some of the starred majors. I’ve heard of seniors who only had to go an extra year to get all their requirements for pre-med straight though?

-Criminal Justice
-Criminology
-Political Science
-International Relations
-Biomedical Sciences/ Bio*
-Neurology*
-Clinical Child Psych./ Clinical Psych.

I’ll probably go to grad. school for all of these. I have a ‘go big or go home’ attitude about the whole thing.
1)I know of some of the careers that I can do but not 100% on all of them. Any ideas?

2)Does anyone know how difficult it is to become a Foreign Officer? I know embassy work is almost impossible.

@xkaitlynx17 Thanks! That’s really reassuring. I was hoping they weren’t saying that just to be nice to me XP. My PSATs said I was predicted to get over a 2000 so I was really upset with my scores. Hopefully we both do better next time around! I hope this is helpful to you too!

Just for the sake of bumping this…

I got my French Grand Concours scores back! (basically a big national french test). I didn’t mention it before because I didn’t have them back yet. I’m ranked 29th in the nation and 28th in my state! Would colleges look at something like that?

Bumping this again. Don’t let this die please!
