Improvement of SAT II scores

Hello,

I just got my November SAT II results

Chem: 780
Math 2: 800
Physics: 750

Is there any point giving the Physics exam again? Will an improvement to this score have any significant effect or not?

You have shown your ability, a score of 730+ is considered a very good score. Congratz on such great scores, you will get into some good colleges (assuming that other stats are decent).

DS has been prepping intensively for the Math II and Physics SATs for months. And I do mean intensively!!! He was making 800s on all his SAT Physics practice tests, without fail.

So…scores come in today.

Math II - 790 (in line with his practice tests)
Physics - 700 (totally out of whack with his practice tests – he was doing better on physics than on math all along!)

We are in shock. He said he completed all the questions. but there were a few problems that looked totally unfamiliar (not recognizable from any of the practice tests).

Will the 700 hurt him? Should he retake – or just not bother sending that particular score?

He’s taking Latin in December and should do very well on that one. (Although who knows? When someone’s acing the practice tests all along with 800s and then suddenly gets a 700 on the Real Thing, then all bets are off.)

Before the exam my preparation was also better for Physics than for Math 2. But honestly, there were some tricky problems in Physics.

And, as far as I know, many colleges ask for 2 subject tests only. I am not sure if 3 subject tests would have more value than 2.

Thanks, mmn, and congrats on your great scores.

I think S will do great on Latin – he has been taking it forever, and he is now reading Vergil (which, honestly, is about as hard as it gets – I myself never made it past one [count 'em, one] of Cicero’s political speeches, and that about did me in).

But who knows?? More and more, it seems like a crap shoot, even when the kid does intensive prep.

Is it possible to send only the Math II score and the Latin score (assuming the latter is better than 700)?

Thanks!!

Diane

Maybe he misbubbled on the Physics?

A 700 is -30 or 24 questions wrong. That is a lot of wrong answers, so maybe he misbubbled.

Knowing how absent-minded DS can be at times, it is certainly possible he misbubbled.

OTOH, though, when we asked him about it right after he took the tests, he said the Math II seemed kind of easy whereas the Physics seemed harder than he’d expected (and weirder, too).

All practice tests? It doesn’t matter what you get on practice test booklets not made by the Collegeboard, including Kaplan, Princeton review, etc. They are not at all representative of your real score.

We used the collegeboard practice tests. And we drilled physics into our son till his eyes bubbled. (He’s a national Merit Semifinalist, BTW.)

Please don’t assume. This board is infamous for assumptions!! It really gets old after a while, I must say.

colleges take best 2 sat2s. 700 is pretty decent. it shouldn’t affect admission.

Thank you, itsme! It’s nice to get a kind word once in a while. :)

Oh, I see then-- it was bad luck. He gets 800s everytime on these practice tests so the 700 must be an outlier, therefore it would be logical for him to take it again. A 700 is about -30 while an 800 is -7, so it is no doubt badluck.

I am unaware of the importance of your last statement or how it even relates to the rest of the post.

Turns out it might have been a case of mis-bubbling. DS remembers that a few problems were tricky – but not 24! However, he’s not going to bother re-taking…he’ll just take the Latin one in December and see how that goes.
