Improving my GPA!!

Hi!

Well to jump right into it I am concerned about my GPA! I am a sophomore in high school (I know I have a little time :P) , and I live in a really competitive school district. My GPA is currently a 4.3 weighted, but in the matter of two years I really want to get it to at least a 4.9 (Please lol). I recently move to a state where everyone is just really focused on being the best, and it has took a lot of time for me to adjust to how competitive it really is.

Breakdown:

Freshman Year (different school system):
-Geometry: A
-World History I: A
-English 9 Honors: A
-Earth Science Honors (I think): A

total GPA in (new state): 4.375

Unfortunately my middle school performance convinced my counselor that I didn’t need the one AP course they allowed, and so I feel as though I am a little behind.

Sophomore Year: This is where it kind of fell apart  (AP Classes were all full since I had just moved)

Semester 1:

  • P.O.B.F (elective): A
  • Biology Honors: A
    -English 2 Honors: B+
  • Biomed (elective): B+

total GPA (dropped): 4.3

I know I am not doing that bad, but the average sophomore in the top 10% of my class has took at least 1 AP class, and for the top 1%, they have took 2-3.

The GPA I really want to achieve by the end of high school is a 4.9-5.0 (no clue how I am going to get there, but I will lol)

For semester 2 I am currently taking all honor classes, and an extra class online so I am hoping that could help! I honestly plan to just take as many classes (online, and in school) as I can in hopes of catching up with the top of my class.

To conclude from all that ^^^ lol
I just would like to know how many AP, and Honor classes should i take, and what should I do to get to my target GPA?

Thanks so much!

L ( who’s afraid of Junior Year)

Also, any tips or strategies for Junior Year?

Are you talking about weighted, or unweighted GPA’s? Your GPA is still fantastic, colleges don’t just look at grades in the application process. Take a couple AP’s next year (but NOT enough to completely ruin your life). Unless you have no life anyway, like me, and can afford to take all AP’s.

" average sophomore in the top 10% " This statement describes something impossible (depending upon how you read it). No average sophomore is in the top 10%. But read another way, the average in the top 10% would be between 5% and 6%.

Work hard. That is what you should do.

I’m talking about weighted, Sorry! Oh the joys of high school talk! I think it’s just that my friends always tell me colleges compare you to your class (in terms of rank) /school district, so I was really concerned lol.
Thanks for the motivation btw! (I needed that!)

Thanks

Where did you get the idea you need to get a 4.9-5.0 GPA? That’s not even possible in our school. You haven’t even explained your school’s weighting system so there’s no way anyone could tell you, but you really should be able to figure out how many courses of what type with what grades would get you the desired GPA. That’s basic algebra.

Also, you are talking about doing all this extra stuff and all these APs and yet you aren’t even getting As in the non-AP classes you are in. Your thinking is way off base. Figure out what you like and work hard at being successful at it.

Please step back from this rat race mentality and think about what interests you and what you want to get out of high school. Don’t become one of the bitter kids on this site saying how they did x and y and z just to impress colleges and they didn’t get in. You do not have to devote years of your life to trying to mold yourself into something you believe some person working in an office somewhere will like.
