Improving Speed on the Essay

Does anybody have any tips on how to increase writing speed for the essay? I have this one student who seems to barely get through 1 side in 20 minutes although what he writes is fairly good. I know length does not matter in and of itself, but in 1 page, he barely get past 2 paragraphs. It's clearly not a particularly complete essay by 25 minutes. I cannot seem to get to the bottom of it. Anybody have any advice? Thanks!

I have the same problem as he does. And I had to resort to memorizing examples thoroughly so that I can write non-stop after the first 30 seconds, which I spend on thinking which examples may work. I also prepared the introduction and conclusion beforehand. In other words, preparation complements performance. A rather desperate and inglorious approach, I concede. Therefore I’d like to hear others’ responds in this matter too.

If your student has 2 or 3 years before applying to college, tell him to look forward to the new format computer-based SAT. If he is a senior, well… speeding up one’s handwriting may take quite a long time for a senior. I think one of his problems is that he spends too much time thinking. Tell he to start writing after 2 minutes, and see how it’ll work.

Thank you for your suggestions. He does get started fairly quickly into the beginning of the allotted time. Rather, he does a sentence, then thinks, another one, then thinks. I still cannot diagnose whether he’s too consciousnesses and stressed about finding the perfect word or he just needs a fire under his belly to go faster.

In that case I suggest that he find himself a template he’s comfortable with. The intro and conclusion can be prepared pretty easily. It can be something as simple as:

Nowadays some people think. It can be argued, however, that … An overview on the following examples helps demonstrate this concept.

In conclusion, after examining … and …, one can see that …

That’s what I wrote on my June essay btw. I got 11.

Or if he’s a perfectionist as you mention, tell him to make his own ornate template.

As modern society rushes forth towards its future, our environments become greatly diversed, and, in turn, so do our views on [ the topic ]. A number of people stick to …, claiming that … Be that as it may, should one look at the problem from a different persective, one can indeed argue otherwise, as shown in the following cases.

Or sth like that…
