Improving writing skills?

How can I improve my writing and vocab? I know this probably really random

Study for the old SAT. Take AP Lang.

I find that reading “higher” literature helps. You inevitably pick up some of the vocab and syntax of those books once you read enough of them.

No. This is not an effective way to learn to write.

Good writing ability comes from reading a lot. You absorb vocabulary, word usage, grammer & writing style from repeatedly “hearing” it as you read, read, read, read. It doesn’t have have to be “higher literature”.

Read “On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction” by William Zinsser. It is the best book out there on clear and concise writing. Then just write, a lot, and check your work against the teachings in the book.

Read books…read lots of books…read books that interest you and not just for the sake of reading. As and when you find new words, note it down and later find its meaning. This way you would improve your vocabulary and reading skills. Also reading books will eventually influence your writing style and your would start seeing improvement in your writing.

@tracy18 @Chris63 @GMTplus7 @TheTennisNinja Thank you guys for the help! Appreciate it

With vocal, the best way to learn is through reading. Also through your reading pay attention to how the writer writes. The writers tone and voice, their use of language, evidence, etc. If you need help with grammar, you can learn from specialized grammar textbooks.
